Germaine and Pizzuto remain perfect in dual matches
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team's four dual win streak was snapped, Thursday, Nov. 21 as Michigan State defeated the Eagles 24-9 at Jenison Field House.
With the loss, Eastern falls to 4-1 overall on the season, while the Spartans improve to 4-1 overall.
The Eagles took the first lead of the dual as Matthew VanCuren (Chargin Falls, Ohio-St. Edward) earned a 6-3 decision over Joseph Johnson in the 149 lb. weight class to give the Green and White a quick 3-0 lead. Redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Heperia) was unable to grab a victory over No. 20 Ryan Watts, falling in a 3-2 decision, knotting the score at 3-3.
Sophomore Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) wrestled MSU's Bobby Nash to a tie after three periods, but the win would go to the Spartans after neither Davis nor Nash were able to get a takedown in the sudden victory. Davis was unable to ride-out Nash as he escaped in the tiebreaker to earn a 4-3 decision for the Spartans.
Eastern suffered a second hard loss in the 174 lb. weight class as Mike Curby (Osseo, Mich.-Hillsdale) battled Kevin Nash to a tie at the end of the third period before Nash found the takedown he needed to secure the 3-1 decision over Curby and extend the MSU lead to 9-3.
Michigan State continued to build on its lead as No. 16 Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) fell in a 6-2 decision to the Spartan's John Rizqallah, bringing the MSU lead to 12-3.
The Spartans extended its lead to 15-3 when MSU's Nick McDiarmid notched a 6-2 decision over No. 15 Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) in the 197 lb. weight class, while Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) fell to No. 12 Mike McClure in the heavyweight class in 2-0 decision.
The Eagles started a comeback in the 125 lb. weight class as Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) grabbed EMU's second win of the day in a high scoring 13-7 decision.
Eastern won back-to-back bouts as the 133 lb. weight class saw a rematch between Vincent Pizzuto (North Jacskson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) and Garth Yenter. The two met up in the first tournament of the season, when Yenter pinned Pizzuto at the MSU Open. The North Jackson, Ohio native found the edge he needed in the rematch as he grabbed a 7-4 decision over Yenter to bring the Green and White within nine of Michigan State.
The wins were not enough as the Spartan's Brian Gibbs pinned Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) in 6:05 to give MSU the 24-9 victory over Eastern.
"I thought we were the better team, but the tougher team won today. They won the close ones and took both overtime matches, and we couldn't get things rolling for us," said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. "We are going to bounce back, you have to have a short term memory in this sport and that is what we are going to do to get ready for a tough dual on Sunday."
Germaine and Pizzuto remain perfect in dual bouts in the 2013-14 season as both improve to 4-0.
The Eagles will be back in action, Sunday, Nov. 24 when they return to Ypsilanti to take on No. 23 Stanford in their first-of-four duals at the Convocation Center. The dual is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
