AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Sophomore Stuart Grehan (Tullamore, Ireland-Colaiste Choilm) fired a five-under 67 in Tuesday's final round of the Firestone Invitational to claim medalist honors and propel the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team to a third place team finish.
Grehan, who was tied for the lead entering the final day, earned Eastern Michigan's first individual medalist honors of the season as he went eagle-par-birdie over the final three holes to win by three strokes at 207 (73-67-67). Grehan's victory was the first of his career and his third career top-10 showing.
The individual title is the first by an Eagle since Casey Olsen finished tied for the top spot at the weather-shortened C&F Bank Intercollegiate, March 24-26, 2013, in Williamsburg, Va. Additionally, his 54-hole total is tied for the second-best mark in the program's history, bettered only by Korey Mahoney's 206 (71-65-70) at the Marshall Invitational, April 8, 2005. The other rounds of 207 were by Brandon Lemons (67-67-73) at the Desert Shootout, March 20, 2010, and by Mahoney (69-70-68) at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Sept. 25, 2005.
South Carolina-Aiken (295-294-282=871) used a round of six-under 282 on Tuesday to leapfrog day-one leader Washington State (289-291-293=873) to grab a two-stroke victory. EMU finished with a 54-hole total of 875 (298-291-286) on the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club North Course.
EMU closes out the fall portion of the schedule at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, Oct. 14-15, in Carmel, Ind.
