Eagles pick up third place finish in night sprints

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team completed its first meet of the 2013-14 season at the Head of the Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 5 on the Oklahoma River.

The Eagles 8+ team turned in a 12th place finish in their first race of the 2013-14 season. The boat led by coxswain Sarah Hillegonds (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) crossed the line at 15:51.98, just 3.18 seconds behind No. 19 Oklahoma's B boat. No. 18 Clemson took home the first-place finish as it paced the field finishing at 14:36.42 in its first race of the fall season.

"The team did a great job today. They made some mistakes that we expect out of young rowers at this stage of development. If we eliminate those mistakes, we will be up in the top five. We have a very young group and the lessons learned will make them very fast in the future," stated head coach Brad Holdren.

The 4+ A team of Ashley Gilmore (Arlington, Wash.-Lakewood), KC Anderson (Garden City, Mich.-Garden City), Emily Kent (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron), Lyndsey Tollas (Hicksville, Ohio-Hicksville) and coxswain Hillegonds placed 22nd out of 34 teams coming across the finish line at 17:17.00.

The 4+ B team that consisted of Krista Burdick (Ypsilanti, Mich.), Stacy Cloutier (Taylor, Mich.-Truman), Sidney Doss, Meghan Knox (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Skyline) and coxswain Tauan Jeffrey (Grove City, Ohio-Fort Hayes) finished just two places behind the A team as they came across the line at 17:37.79 for a 24th place finish.

The Clemson 4+ A team took the first-place finish for its second win of the afternoon as it posted a time of 16:03.78, six seconds ahead of second-place Tulsa.

The Green and White's 8+ team competed in their final race of the day as they were able to take part in the night sprints, a 500m dash under the stadium lights on the Oklahoma River. The Eagles posted a season-best third place finish as they crossed the line at 1:44.99, just 2.17 seconds behind winner Central Oklahoma.

Holdren said, "This is a great racecourse with strong competition and we're looking forward to next year already. We will also use this weekend to better prepare for the coming four weeks.  Its just been a great day of racing for us."

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 13 when they head to the Occoquan Chase in Occoquan, Va.
