Women's Golf Closes Out Palmetto Intercollegiate in 15th Place

Freshman Kelsey Murphy ties for 40th place with a 230
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team wrapped up competition at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday, Oct. 27, at the par-72 Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. For the 54-hole event, the Eagles shot a cumulative total of 935 (310-319-306) for 15th place, four strokes ahead of cross-county rival Michigan (306-319-306=939).
After Sunday's second round was suspended due to darkness, the Eagles finished their final six holes before playing the final round.
Winning the tournament by three strokes was No. 39 Kansas, which finished with a score of 876 (297-295-284). Individually, Georgia State's Melissa Siviter took home top honors, finishing with a score of two-under par 214 (77-70-67). Overall, the tournament featured four teams ranked inside the top 50 in the nation.
For the Eagles, freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) was the highest finisher, coming in tied for 40th with a score of 230 (80-76-74). During the five fall tournaments the Eagles participated in, Murphy finished as the squad's top scorer in three of them with a team-best average of 76.64 strokes per round.
Redshirt sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) followed with a 232 (79-79-74) in 47th, while redshirt junior Lois Schoof (Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) tied for 63rd place with a 236 (76-84-76). Rounding out the lineup, Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) and Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) fired rounds of 237 (75-80-82) and 285 (94-96-95), respectively.
The event wraps up the fall season for the Green and White, who now will focus on individual performances over the winter in preparation for the spring season, which begins Feb. 17-18 in New Braunfels, Texas, with the Jim West Challenge.
