YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University soccer team lost a hard-fought, heartbreaking contest, 1-0, Sunday afternoon, Oct. 13, to the Miami University RedHawks. After a scoreless first 108 minutes of play at Scicluna Field, Miami's Kayla Zakrzewski found the net with just 1:18 remaining in the second overtime to give the RedHawks the victory.

EMU (7-6-1, 4-2-0 MAC) controlled ball possession for the majority of the game while out-shooting Miami (6-6-2, 3-1-2 MAC), 20-11, including shots on goal (6-4).  Both defenses were strong throughout as the two teams struggled to find quality scoring opportunities. Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) (7-6-1) made three saves for the Green and White while MU's Allison Norenberg (5-6-2) stopped six shots for the shutout.

The first half was just about as even as it could be as both teams took seven shots each with two landing on target. Moreover, EMU and Miami each committed one foul in the game's first 45 minutes. The RedHawks held a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks in the opening half.

In the second overtime, the Eagles had one of their best scoring opportunities of the match. EMU quickly moved the ball up field in the 107th minute, and Angela Vultaggio (Chesterfield, Mich. -L'Anse Creuse North) found teammate Bianca Rossi (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus), who was able to speed past a defender, on a run. However, Rossi's shut just sailed wide of the net, and the match continued.

Two minutes later, the game ended in bizarre fashion. The ball appeared to be heading out-of-bounds and would have given a goal kick to EMU. However, Miami midfielder Kelsey Dinges got to the ball and sent a cross into the box where Zakrzewski scored past McCabe. Players from both teams stood motionless on the field, wondering what exactly happened and thinking the ball was out of play. However, the head referee consulted with the assistant referee who motioned that the ball never went out-of-bounds. The referee signaled the goal counted, giving Miami the 1-0 advantage and the win with just 1:18 to play in the contest.

The Eagles continue Mid-American Conference play with two MAC East foes in cross-divisional matchups next week. EMU heads to Athens, Ohio to battle the Bobcats of Ohio University, Oct. 18, before staying in the Buckeye State to take on Kent State, Oct. 20.
