WEST POINT, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – Closing out the non-conference portion of the 2013 season, the Eastern Michigan University football team dropped a 50-25 decision to the Army Black Knights Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12, at Michie Stadium. The Eagles (1-5, 0-2 MAC) held the early edge, but the Army (3-4) ground attack proved to be too much for the Green and White.

Army outgained EMU, 551-417, due in large part to 513 yards on the ground. Junior running back Terry Baggett had a career day, rushing for an Army record 304 yards on 18 carries, including four touchdowns. Baggett shattered the previous mark of 269 yards by Mike Wallace who accomplished the feat against Louisville in 1999.

Bronson Hill (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Catholic Central) was the bright spot for the EMU offense, racking up 234 all-purpose yards. The junior running back ran 20 times for 143 yards while also catching four passes for 91 yards. Through the air, Tyler Benz (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine Township South) went 17-of-26 with 223 passing yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball Hunter Matt (Wyandotte, Mich.-Roosevelt) led all Eagles with 13 tackles.

The dynamic duo of Benz and Hill has now combined for 920 yards and nine touchdowns in the past two games against the Black Knights. Last season versus Army, Oct. 20, 2012, Benz threw 19-of-31 for 369 yards and five touchdowns, including one to Hill. Meanwhile, Hill ran for 185 yards and one touchdown on the ground in the Eagles' 48-38 win at Rynearson Stadium.

The Green and White marched right down the field on the opening drive, going 10 plays in 76 yards, capped off by a 17 yard screen pass from Benz to Hill. Benz was a perfect 5-of-5 on the drive for 63 yards, including two completions to Hill for 44 yards. After getting inside the Army red zone and facing third-and-long, the redshirt junior quarterback scrambled to find an open Hill in the flat. The EMU running back made the catch and proceeded to shift his way until he found the end zone. On the extra point attempt, a bad snap forced backup quarterback/holder Mark Iannotti (Schaumberg, Ill.-Schaumberg) to try to make a play, and Schaumberg, Ill. native certainly did that, finding Cole Gardner (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia) just shy of the goal line. Gardner was able to break a tackle, reach out and break the break the plane for the unorthodox two-point conversion. With 9:24 remaining in the opening quarter, the Eagles led, 8-0.

The Black Knights responded, scoring on their own opening drive. The ground-and-pound triple option offense used eight plays, including seven on the ground, to go 70 yards down the field. Baggett ran four yards to finish the drive, and the point after attempt was good, cutting the EMU lead to one, 8-7 with 4:55 left in the first quarter.

Eastern wasted no time increasing the lead back to eight, taking 53 seconds to go 65 yards to the house. Benz completed a 10-yard pass to Duwhan Alford (Elkhart, Ind.-Concord) before Hill took over the rest of the drive using a 43-yard run to set up a 12-yard scamper, making it 15-7. However, 20 seconds later, Baggett answered for Army by heading 67 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The Black Knights lined up for two, and Santiago kept the ball to convert, tying the game up, 15-15.

Following the first punt of the game, Army took its first lead of the game with a long, 17-play drive that lasted 7:13. On third-and-goal from the one-yard line, Trenton Turrentine took the pitch from Santiago and beat a few EMU defenders to the corner, putting the Black Knights up, 22-15, with 9:46 to go in the opening half.

Following drives where both teams were unable to score, the Eagles created a long drive of their own. Eating up nearly the entire remaining time in the first half, Hill made some key runs that eventually set up a 31-yard field goal by Dylan Mulder (Saline, Mich.-Saline) with five seconds left before halftime. Eastern used 17 plays to go 73 yards to cut into the deficit, heading into the locker room trailing 22-18.

Benz was efficient through the air in the first half, completing 8-of-13 passes yards. However, it was Hill who was the star of the EMU offense as he ran 15 times for 114 yards, including a 43-yard dash that set up a 12-yard touchdown run. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native also caught a pair of passes totaling 44 yards.

Army found success on offense as 218 yards of its 244 yards of total offense came on the ground. Baggett rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries while Turrentine ran four times for 61 yards. Santiago kept the ball on 12 occasions for 31 yards while passing for 26 yards on 3-of-4 throws.

After another Baggett touchdown on Army's first drive of the second half, EMU quickly entered the red zone after a 53-yard screen pass from Benz to Hill. However, a fumble on a third down slant gave the ball back to Army. Two plays later, Baggett would find another hole and scamper 96 yards to increase the Army lead, 36-18, with 9:05 remaining in the third quarter.

On fourth-and-long, Benz hit Dustin Creel (Industry, Pa.-Western Beaver) for 28 yards and a touchdown to give the Eagles its first points of the second half, making the score, 43-25.

Following back-to-back road games in New York, the Eagles return to Ypsilanti to host Ohio University, Oct. 19, in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional contest. The contest is Band Day, with 13 high school bands performing as one during a special halftime concert. Kickoff from Rynearson Stadium is set for 1 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear white as the game will be a "White Out."

Additionally, the contest will also be an Eagles Unite game, where student-athletes from various EMU athletic teams will come out to support the football team. The athletes will wear their special Eagles Unite t-shirt and form a pregame tunnel from which the team will emerge onto the field. At halftime, they will return for a special on-field introduction as well as a celebratory photograph.
