EMU and Central Michigan to represent Michigan in third annual challenge

MEET NOTES

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team heads to the “Windy City,” Chicago, Ill., Feb. 2, to partner with Central Michigan University in the Michigan/Illinois Challenge.  The Eagles and Chippewas will square off against Illinois State University and host University of Illinois at Chicago to see which state sports better gymnastics. This will be the third annual meet between the four schools with each state winning once in the previous two meetings.

A NARROW DEFEAT: EMU dropped its home opener by a narrow margin, 194.025-193.900, to Bowling Green State University, Jan. 26, in Bowen Field House. The Eagles (0-2, 0-2 MAC) hosted the Falcons (1-3, 1-1 MAC) on the wrong night as Bowling Green scored its highest mark in three years. For EMU, the tally of 193.900 was still a solid mark, higher than the Green and White scored in any meet last season.

WILLETTE'S CAREER NIGHT: Sophomore Anna Willette led the Eagles against Bowling Green on the uneven parallel bars and balance beam with career-high scores of 9.825 in each event. Willette tied for second on the bars with teammate Ashley Quinton while tying for first on the beam with Bowling Green's Alyssa Nocella.

FULLER SHOWS SENIOR LEADERSHIP: Amanda Fuller stepped up as a senior to lead EMU against BGSU. Fuller took home a victory for the Eagles in the floor exercise with an impressive career-high score of 9.825 along with a third-place score of 9.800 on the vault.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: While Eastern will be combining its score with Central Michigan, the two Michigan schools will still compete against one another although the scores will not affect conference records. CMU sports a 3-3, 0-1 MAC record on the season, losing its only conference meet to the Cardinals of Ball State University. The Chippewas come into the challenge ranked No. 23 in the nation after finishing third in a quad meet against Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa St., Jan. 26. As for the Illinois schools, the Illinois State Redbirds (1-2) and the Illinois-Chicago Flames (1-4) will team up after competing against one another, Jan. 27, when UIC walked away with a 194.050-192.450 road victory.

LAST YEAR'S CHALLENGE: A season ago, EMU and CMU were unable to clinch the win, giving ISU and UIC the challenge victory. The state of Michigan scored a combined 383.975, compared to an Illinois 387.000. The Eagles posted a team score of 191.775 to finish fourth. UIC came out on top recording a 194.125 followed by Illinois State and Central Michigan earning team scores of 192.875 and 192.200, respectfully.

UP NEXT, CARDINALS INVADE BOWEN FIELD HOUSE: Following the dual state challenge, the Eagles return to the friendly confines of Bowen Field House to take on MAC foe Ball State, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. The Cardinals are currently undefeated in MAC play with a 2-0 record to go along with a 2-2 regular season mark. BSU hosts Centenary College and Penn, Feb. 1.
