Eagles travel out of state for the first time this season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will compete out of state for the first time this season, heading to South Bend, Ind. for the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The invitational kicks off Friday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. before starting back up on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10a.m.
“It is always an enjoyable trip to Notre Dame for the Meyo Invite as the meet annually attracts very strong competition from around the country,” commented Head Coach John Goodridge.
After being named in the eighth best team in the country according to Track and Field News Magazine's dual meet rankings, the Eagles finished runner-up at the Grand Valley State University Quad, Jan. 26. EMU tallied 154.50 points behind Grand Valley State's 164.50 points in the final scored meet before the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 22-23.
There were many strong performances at the GVSU Quad as the Green and White brought back eight individual victories. In three of those wins, EMU set conference-best times. The 4x400-meter relay team of Jeff Elam, Tyler Ross, Jason Ervin and Cameron Bolton crossed the finish line in first with a MAC-best time of 3:14.67. Bolton set the top conference mark individually with a 48.15 in the 400-meter dash. In the one-mile run, Eastern's Terefe Ejigu holds the MAC's top time after his 4:07.31 winning time in the quad meet.
Last season, Ian Hancke led Eastern in the distance races with a top placing time in the 3,000-meter run. Hancke completed the race in 8:24.86, while Harry Dixon took second in the race with an 8:27.22. Grzegorz Kalinowski had the second best time in Eagle history in the 1,000-meter run. Kalinowski completed the distance in 2:22.76 behind Chris O'Hara from Tulsa, who was the 2010 NCAA runner-up in the mile.
