Central Michigan claims a 77-51 victory in a re-match of the 2012 MAC Tournament Championship game

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team could not slow down the high-powered Central Michigan University offense, as the Chippewas notched a 77-51 victory Sunday, Jan. 13, at McGurik Arena. The contest was the first between the two programs since the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship game which saw the Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament on a last-second layup.

With the loss Eastern Michigan drops to 3-12 (1-1 MAC), while Central Michigan improved its mark to 8-7 (2-0 MAC).

EMU was led by Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting to go along with four steals and four rebounds. India Hairston (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) chipped in nine points and seven boards while Iesha Collins (Chicago, Ill.-Bogan) had a career-best eight points in 20 minutes of work.

CMU, which entered the contest ranked 23rd nationally in scoring offense, put two players in double figures, led by Jessica Green with 10 points, including a pair of  triples. CMU's Crystal Bradford notched a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Chips set the nets on fire, hitting 49.9-percent (25-for-57) from the field, while EMU managed a 40.7 percent (22-for-54) clip. The EMU did out-score CMU in the paint, 30-22, but gave up 12 triples to the Chippewas.  Additionally, Central scored 30 points off of 22 Eastern turnovers.

Turnovers plagued the Eagles the early stages, as 12 early EMU miscues built the CMU advantage to 10, 16-10, with 11:04 showing in the first half. Fifteen of CMU's 16 points came off the turnover with Green pacing the attack with a pair of three-point field goals.

The CMU edge would grow to 15, 30-15, with 9:40 left in the half as Green laid in her 10th point of the stanza to force the Eagles to burn another timeout to stop the run. The run continued as the teams headed into the locker room at the halftime break with the home-standing Chippewas holding a 21-point cushion, 42-21.

After the intermission, the Chippewas continued to build on its lead, extending the advantage to as many as 30 points.

The Eagles return home Wednesday, Jan. 16, to host the University of Toledo. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.  For tickets call 734.487.2282 or visit EMUTix.com.
