YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michign University volleyball team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the 2012 Coke/Michigan Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan. Eastern opens up the tournament with a double-header, Friday, Sept. 14. EMU starts with the host Wolverines at 11 a.m. and a Friday evening match against Duke at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles conclude this weekend's action with a match Saturday, Sept. 15. EMU will face Western Kentucky at 4 p.m.
HOT START TO 2012: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball squad has been on fire to start the 2012 campaign, winning 10 of its first 12 matches, including winning the Mean Green Invitational last weekend. The Eagles are 10-1 in tournament matches this season and look to stay hot at the Coke/Michigan Invitational this weekend.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THE COKE/MICHIGAN INVITATIONAL FIELD: Overall against this weekend's field, the Eagles are 12-29. Eastern has competed with all three teams it takes on this weekend, and its first opponent, the University of Michigan, has the most storied history with the Green and White. EMU has seen the Wolverines in action 38 times, while Michigan holds a 28-10 edge.
In one match with the Duke University Blue Devils, EMU is 1-0. The Eagles and Blue Devils faced-off back in 1989 when they dropped Duke in three sets, Sept. 9, at a tournament hosted by the University of South Carolina.
Finally, Eastern and Western Kentucky University have competed twice with an even 1-1 record. The Eagles dropped the last match they had with the Hilltoppers, 3-1. However, the match took place in 2009, when the Eagles struggled going just 5-28. EMU and WKU squared off in a tournament hosted by DePaul, Sept. 19. The Green and White's victory against the Hilltoppers came in 2002 when the Eagles swept Western Kentucky, Sept. 13, at a tournament in Macomb, Ill.
SUCCESS IN SEPTEMBER: The month of September has treated the Green and White well, as EMU holds a 227-198-5 all-time. EMU has posted nine double-digit win totals in the month of September, including a perfect 12-0 back in 1990. The Eagles are 6-1 so far this September and have the opportunity to post a 13-1 mark if they go undefeated throughout the rest of the month.
IAQUANIELLO BREAKS RECORDS AT MEAN GREEN INVITE: Senior outside hitter, Rachel Iaquaniello, became one of the most decorated volleyball players in Eastern Michigan University history over the weekend when she took over the top-spot for career kills and career attack attempts. The Plymouth, Mich. native came into the tournament 12 kills behind Roxanne Munch's all-time kill record of 1,537. With the Eagles leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sept. 7, 24-23 in the third set, Iaquaniello finished off the Islanders with her 13th kill of the match giving her 1,538 for her career, one ahead of Munch's 23-year old record which was set in 1989. That wasn't the only record Iaquaniello broke on the afternoon, as Iaquaniello's 37 attacks against the Islanders gave her 4,466 career attacks, moving her ahead of previous record holder Jennifer Nighswander. Iaquaniello now has 1,601 kills in her career and 4,666 attack attempts.
Iaquaniello posted 54 total kills in the four matches, averaging 3.38 kills per set helping Eastern to a 4-0 weekend at the Mean Green Invitational. In EMU's three set win over Hofstra, Sept. 8, the senior was able to post a .348 attack percentage and was in double-figures for kills in all four matches, helping EMU to a 10-2 record on the season. The Plymouth, Mich. native had a double-double in Eastern's match against host North Texas, Sept. 7, as she had 14 kills and 13 digs. Her highest kill-total of the weekend was in the Green and White's final match as she notched 16 against Oral Roberts University.
BAKER NAMED MEAN GREEN INVITATIONAL MVP: Senior middle blocker, Kristen Baker, led Eastern Michigan University to a 4-0 weekend and was also a force on the defensive side, notching 12 total blocks throughout the Mean Green Invitational. Against host North Texas she had four blocks, while she also had four in the Eagles final match against Oral Roberts University, Saturday, Sept. 8. Baker posted stellar offensive numbers as well. Baker played in all 16 sets for the Eagles posting double-figure kills in a pair of matches, including a 16-kill performance against the tournament host. In that match, Baker notched 16 kills on 30 attempts, making just three errors in the five-setter. Her attack percentage was at a .433 clip against North Texas. The Mentor, Ohio native also posted three service aces in that match against the Mean Green. Baker was named the tournament's MVP after posting a total of 38 kills and a .378 attack percentage. The senior made just seven attack errors in 82 attempts in the tournament.
For the season, Baker is having success offensively for EMU with the second-most kills on the squad. She is averaging 2.55 kills per set, while posting a .303 attack percentage. Baker has 30 total blocks and is averaging 0.64 blocks per set on the 2012 campaign.
SHORT NAMED TO MEAN GREEN ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Junior, Erin Short, earned All-Tournament team honors at the 2012 Mean Green Invitational last weekend. The Orrville, Ohio native posted 1.81 kills per set at the invite, including a 12-kill performance against Oral Roberts in the Eagles final match, Sept. 8, at the tournament hosted by North Texas. Short had a successful opening match of the tournament, posting a .353 attack percentage (8-2-17) against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sept. 7.
Defensively, Short posted a perfect reception percentage at the Mean Green Invitational. She had zero reception errors in 40 attempts, and averaged one block per set in the tournament. The outside hitter notched 16 blocks en route to her All-Tournment team nomination.

The Green and White will spend the next three matches on the road before hosting the Broncos to start MAC play, Sept. 21.
HOT SHOT FRESHMEN: A pair of first-year collegiate athletes in Alyssa Davis and Sierra Reed are earning their starting spots by posting exceptional numbers this season.
Davis, a setter from Kalamazoo, Mich., has played well in her 43 sets for the Eagles. The freshman has posted 374 assists in that time, averaging 8.70 assists per set while setting the Green and White's offense.
Defensively, it has been Reed who has lifted Eastern. Reed has started at libero in each of the Eagles' all 52 sets and has notched 216 digs in that time. The Parker City, Ind. native has averaged 4.15 digs per set and has just 13 reception errors in her first eight collegiate matches.
LEADING THE MAC IN...: Eastern has been near the top of the conference in multiple categories both as a team and individually, but the Eagles .833 winning percentage is the best in the MAC with Northern Illinois coming in second at .615.
As a team, the Green and White is third in the conference in aces per set. As of Sept. 9, EMU is averaging 1.43 aces per set which follows just Bowling Green (1.47) and Akron (1.45). The Eagles are also fourth in the MAC in hitting percentage and digs per set. Eastern is hitting .220, while Akron's .251 attack percentage leads the conference. The Green and White is posting 16.02 digs per set while Western Michigan leads at 17.66.
Defensively as a team the Eagles are second in the conference behind Western Michigan in digs per set. While the Broncos average 18.90, EMU is posting 17.78 digs per set.
Individually, Eastern has a few student-athletes showing off their skill on the hardwood. Rachel Iaquaniello is leading the MAC in kills at 4.91 per set, with the next closest, Kelly Lamberti of Ohio, coming in with 3.87 per set. Kristen Baker ranks fourth in the conference in attack percentage at a .303 clip. Megan Crawshaw is third in the MAC for blocking, averaging 1.11 blocks per set, while Sierra Reed is ninth in digs per set, with 4.15.
