TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team saw a pair of one-run leads disappear as the University of Toledo walked-off to a 4-3, 12-inning victory Thursday afternoon, May 17. The Eagles (24-27; 14-11 MAC) committed three straight errors to load the bases for the Rockets (28-25; 17-8 MAC), who scored two runs on a single to right field to end the game.
With the loss, the Eagles' hopes of a Mid-American Conference West Division crown were dashed. EMU remains in third place in the division with two games to play in the 2012 regular season and is two games behind Central Michigan University for second place.
Lee Longo gave the Green and White a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded single to left field. Neil Butara gave the Eagles an incredible performance on the mound over seven innings in which he gave up just one earned run on three hits. Jordan Glover then came on to throw a solid eighth inning before allowing the tying run to score in the ninth by way of two walks and two hit batsmen.
Pitching once again took over until the 12th inning, when Tucker Rubino put EMU ahead on a sacrifice fly. It all fell apart for the Eagles in the bottom of that frame as Magsig committed two throwing errors and Ben Dartnell (1-1) had one as well to fill the bags with Rockets with nobody out. Dan Zuchowski sealed the Eagles' fate in the following at-bat with a two-RBI single to right.
Dartnell was not charged with any earned runs, but still took his first loss of the season in two innings of work. Paul Schaak allowed Zuchowski's game-winning knock after Darnell was removed after facing two batters in the 12th.
Butara rebounded from a subpar performance last weekend with a quality start against Toledo. He fanned five UT batters and walked two while lowering his season ERA to 3.80. EMU pitchers allowed six walks.
The Eagles fell to 0-2 in extra-inning games and lost for a second straight game when taking a lead into the eighth inning.
Toledo starter Ryan Wilkinson pitched an effective six innings over which he gave up a pair of earned runs on seven hits. Cody Umbright (1-0) was credited with the win after recording the final out in the 12th.
Offensively, Matt Hitt (1-for-4) cranked his seventh long ball of the season to tie the game at one apiece in the fourth inning. Brent Ohrman (2-for-5), Sam Ott (1-for-3), Lee Longo (2-for-4) and Daniel Russell (1-for-4) all doubled in the game for EMU. Hitt, Longo and Rubino (1-for-5) each had an RBI.
For the Rockets, Zuchowski had two RBI and accounted for one of only five UT hits on the afternoon.
Toledo broke through for the game's first run in the third on an RBI single by Ben Hammer. Hitt's solo shot to left field knotted the score in the top of the fourth, 1-1.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game, 2-1, in the sixth when Longo's bases-loaded knock plated Russell. On that same play, Ohrman rounded third and attempted to score, but the throw from the outfield was in plenty of time to deny EMU a two-run edge.
Butara departed after seven innings and left the game in the hands of Glover. After working a scoreless eighth, Glover lost command of his pitches and allowed the tying run to cross when he plunked Anthony Smith with the bases loaded.
Rubino's sacrifice fly in the 12th appeared to put the Eagles in a great position for Darnell to secure the victory in the bottom of the inning, but three straight mishaps by EMU defenders allowed UT to ultimately score twice and sneak away winners in the opening game of the series.
Game two of the series is set for Friday afternoon, May 18, at 3:05 p.m.
