EMU's bats stymied in four-hit afternoon

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a second straight decision, 5-2, to the University of Toledo Friday afternoon, May 18, at Scott Park Baseball Complex. With the loss, the Eagles (24-28; 14-12 MAC) dropped a half game behind Western Michigan University and into fourth place in the Mid-American Conference West Division with one game remaining.
Toledo's (29-25; 18-8 MAC) victory combined with a Central Michigan University loss gave the club its first division title in school history.
The Rockets received all the scoring they would need in a four-run second inning off of EMU starter Steve Weber (7-4). UT starting pitcher Matt Kuna (7-1) turned in a stellar seven-inning, two-hit performance to claim his seventh win of the season.
Down 5-0 in the ninth, Eastern Michigan tried to mount a comeback, but fell short despite pushing across a pair of runs to make it a 5-2 score. The Green and White managed just four hits on the afternoon and did not put a runner in scoring position until the eighth inning.
Weber settled in after the rocky second inning, but took his first loss in his last eight starts. He gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Brian Valente gave a good effort in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Lee Longo had another fine day offensively, hitting a double for a second straight game and going 2-for-4 with an RBI. The two-bagger was Longo's ninth of the season. Brent Ohrman (1-for-4) and John Rubino (1-for-3) were the only other EMU players to register a hit against the Rockets' pitching staff. Daniel Russell (0-for-3) also recorded a sacrifice-fly RBI in the ninth.
Three Toledo players posted multiple-hit afternoons including Joe Corfman, who bounced back from an 0-for-5 effort in game one to go 2-for-4 with an RBI. James Miglin and Matt Delewski each went 2-for-4, with Delewski driving in a run. Nate Langhals (1-for-2) registered a pair of RBI including the game-winner on a sacrifice bunt in the second inning.
After breezing through the opening frame, Weber worked himself into trouble in the second as the Rockets scored four times on four hits to take the early 4-0 edge. Mark Lapakis followed up a Miglin double to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Delewski then singled in Miglin for the inning's first run. UT added to its run total on a pair of RBI groundouts and a single from Corfman.
UT extended its lead to 5-0 in the sixth following a Tucker Rubino fielding error at shortstop which prolonged the inning and put runners on the corners with two out. Langhals brought Delewski home on a single up the middle.
EMU's offensive woes continued through most of the game as Kuna faced just 25 batters before departing at the conclusion of the seventh inning. With Kuna out of the game and Alex Radon on the hill, the Eagles finally moved a runner into scoring position when Ben Magsig took second base on a passed ball. Magsig would be stranded there as Rubino grounded out to end the inning.
The Eagles put together a nice ninth inning, but were only able to score a pair of runs to make the final score 5-2 in favor of Toledo. Ohrman started the frame off with a single and came around to score on a Longo double to left center. Russell's sacrifice fly plated Sam Ott to round out the scoring.
