Men's Swim and Dive Puts Seven On Academic All-MAC Squad

Douglas, Esentan, Everson, Kinross, Linder, Renard and Saunders earn the annual award

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced its 2011-12 Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-MAC team Wednesday, April 4, as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 18 student-athletes were named to the team, including seven from the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving squad. Kevin Douglas, Troy Esentan, Gus Everson, Michael Kinross, Ricky Linder, Gilles Renard and Andrew Saunders earned the annual award, while Tyler Capen, Jake Heyblom, Aaron Lawson and Matt Zavislak were honorable mention selections.

Douglas, a 3.96 Supply Chain Management major, took eighth on the one meter board at the 2012 MAC Championships with a score of 283.70 and 10th on the three meter event with 309.55 points. The senior owns the fourth-best mark in the MAC for the three meter dive after tallying 332.47 points in the event at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 2.

A 3.22 Finance major, Esentan was named to the All-MAC First Team this season after winning the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke titles at the MAC Championships, racing to times of 3:53.14 and 1:58.23, respectively. He also took fifth in the 200 IM  at the championships, finishing the event in 1:49.40. Esentan owns the 11th-fastest 500 free time in the MAC with a mark of 4:39.24, accomplished against Xavier on Jan. 13. The senior also posted the sixth-best time in the conference for the 1,000 free after racing to a 9:36.00 finish against Miami on Feb. 4.

Everson is a 3.92 Actuarial Science major who took 13th in the 50 freestyle at the 2012 MAC Championships in 20.58, 23rd in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.18 and 16th in the 100 free in 45.78. He also anchored the 200 medley relay team that took first in 1:33.44 against Miami on Feb. 4. On Jan. 13, Everson took third in the 50 free against Cincinnati in 21.99.

Kinross, a 3.47 Secondary Education major, placed seventh in the finals for the 200 butterfly in 1:50.38 and eighth in the 100 butterfly in 49.49 at the 2012 MAC Championships. He contributed to three first-place finishes against Miami on Feb. 4 with top finishes in the 100 fly in 50.96 and the 200 fly in 1:52.62 while helping the 200 medley relay to a 1:33.44, first place finish. His accomplishments against Miami helped land him MAC Swimmer of the Week honors on Feb. 8.

Linder earns his second consecutive Academic All-MAC award. The 3.93 Finance major recorded the 14th-fastest time in the conference for the 500 freestyle at the EMU Invite on Dec. 2 with a time of 4:40.80 as well as the ninth-best time in the 1,650 in 16:20.92. The junior placed fourth in the 500 free against Wayne State on Jan. 21 with a 4:52.88 effort. Against Cincinnati on Jan. 13, Linder placed fifth in the 1,000 free after finishing the event in 10:05.37.

Renard also picks up his second Academic All-MAC honor. A  3.71 Physics Research major, Renard placed eighth in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:58.36 and 15th in the 500 freestyle in 4:35.67 at the MAC Championships. He owns the 10th-fastest time in the MAC for the 1,000 freestyle after completing the event in 9:46.88 against Wayne State on Jan. 21. The senior also placed third in the 500 freestyle in 9:47.51 against Miami to help the Eagles secure their 60th consecutive MAC dual-meet victory.

Saunders rounds out the Academic All-MAC squad. The 3.75 Finance major was an All-MAC First Team selection this season after winning the three meter title at the MAC Championships. He is also a qualifier for the Canadian Olympic Diving Trials which are slated for May 25-27. Saunders recorded the second-highest score for the three meter dive in the MAC after tallying 371.10 points against Oakland on Nov. 12. The junior also posted the second-best mark in the one meter dive with 339.30 points against Wayne State on Jan. 20.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Only outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are considered.
