Eagles Edged in 10 Innings by Ball State, 5-4

Fluky play gives BSU the series win

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the 10th inning, but Ball State University scored a pair of its own in the bottom of that frame to claim a 5-4 win Sunday, April 22, at the Ball Diamond. The Eagles (18-21; 9-6 MAC) lost a Mid-American Conference series for just the second time this season as the Cardinals (11-26; 6-9 MAC) won their second.

Eastern Michigan rallied from a 3-0 deficit when Daniel Russell tripled with the bases loaded to tie the contest in the sixth. Neither team scored again until the 10th, when Lee Longo roped an RBI single to left field to give EMU a one-run edge, 4-3.

The Eagles were an out away from winning their 10th MAC game of the season, but T.J. Weir singled in the tying run and Brandon Estep scored the game-winner on a wild pitch which was supposed to be the first pitch of an intentional walk from Joe Battistelli (2-5).

The Eagles amassed only five hits on the afternoon, giving them eight total knocks over their last two games. Sunday's contest also marked the first extra-innings game for EMU this season.

Russell's triple was his team-leading fifth of the season and gave him 13 RBI on the 2012 campaign. He went 1-for-3. Brent Ohrman's hitting streak grew to 23 games with a 1-for-5 afternoon. Ben Magsig (1-for-4), Longo (1-for-5) and Matt Hitt (1-for-3) were the other EMU players to record a hit.

After a rough first inning, Ryan Lavoie settled down and gave a strong performance over his final four innings of work. The freshman tossed five-plus innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one. Despite taking the loss, Battistelli was strong in his 4.2 innings on the hill, giving up just two runs (one earned) on a pair of hits.

Estep and Weir each had a pair of hits and an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, with Estep going 2-for-5 and Weir 2-for-4. Billy Wellman went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair in BSU's three-run first inning.

Jacob Brewer was impressive for a depleted Cardinals' pitching staff, tossing eight innings of three-run, four hit baseball in a spot start. Nestor Bautista (1-1) picked up the win in 1.2 innings of work in which he allowed an earned run and a hit.

Lavoie labored his way through the first inning as BSU hitters touched him up for three runs on two singles and two doubles. Estep started off the scoring when he plated Wes Winkle with a double to left field. Wellman drove in two more with a two-bagger to right.

The EMU righty tightened up in the second and sent the Cardinals down in order on three groundouts. In fact, he only allowed two more baserunners until Head Coach Jay Alexander took him out of the game in the sixth.

Meanwhile, the Eagles were struggling to put runners on base. The Green and White stranded Matt Hitt, who singled down the left field line, at first base in the second inning. In the third, Ohrman singled with one down, but was caught stealing later in the frame.

Finally in the sixth, EMU posted its first scoring threat of the afternoon. Magsig started the inning off with a single. Sam Ott then drew a one-out walk and Tucker Rubino did the same with two down. That left it up to Russell, who turned on a 1-2 pitch and slammed it to right field. Russell motored into third base and evened the score at 3-3.

Pitchers for both squads were again in firm control until the ninth, when Russell and Bo Kinder walked to put two on with one out. Bautista entered the game for BSU in relief of Devin Wilburn, and induced a double-play ball off the bat of Jamie Simpson to end the inning.

In the 10th, Ott was issued the sixth walk of the afternoon for EMU and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Longo made Bautista pay for his arrant throw when he singled to centerfield to plate Ott.

Trailing by a run in its final at-bat, Ball State put runners on first and second as Mitch Widau walked with one out. The Eagles nabbed the lead runner on a force out to put the Cardinals on the brink. But Weir tied the game on a single which he tucked inside the left field line. That hit advanced Estep to third base, who provided the winning tally when a Battistelli wild pitch was unable to be corralled by Hitt.

The Eagles will look to get back into the win column Friday-Sunday, April 27-29, when they host Northern Illinois University at Oestrike Stadium.
