Butara throws complete game, Ohrman's hitting streak stopped at 23 games

Re-Listen to the Game.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— A pair of unfortunate ninth-inning errors by Eastern Michigan University spoiled a brilliant complete-game outing for starting pitcher Neil Butara (3-4), as Northern Illinois University stole the series opener, 1-0, Friday, April 27, at Oestrike Stadium. The two teams combined for just five hits in a game which lasted one hour and 54 minutes

The Huskies (12-29; 6-10 MAC) broke the scoreless tie with two down in the top of the ninth when a short throw by third baseman Ben Magsig skipped away from first baseman Lee Longo. Longo had a chance to throw Alex Jones out at home, but his toss was also off target, allowing him to score from second base.

Butara threw his first-career complete game for the Eagles (18-22; 9-7 MAC) in a nine-inning, 105 pitch performance. The junior right hander scattered just three hits while striking out four and walking four. He was not charged with an earned run. Butara was the second EMU pitcher (Steve Weber) in the last week to go the distance on the hill.

The Green and White was shutout for the first time this season and fell to 8-4 at home and 3-7 in games decided by one run.

EMU registered two of the contest's five hits and put just one runner in scoring position against NIU starter Taylor Nawrocki (4-4), who went eight innings while striking out seven, walking two and allowing a pair of hits. Nawrocki retired 22 consecutive hitters from the first until the eighth inning.

Kyle Glancy pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season for the Huskies.

Magsig hit a single to finish the day 1-for-4, while Adam Dennison was 1-for-3. Brent Ohrman went 0-for-4 to snap his career-best 23-game hitting streak.

Jones (1-for-3), Troy White (1-for-1) and Joe Battaglia (1-for-3) recorded the only base knocks for the Huskies.

Magsig led off the first inning with a sharp single to left field. Ohrman then drilled a shot to the deepest part of the ballpark in centerfield. However, Jamison Wells made a great running catch to rob Ohrman of a sure-double and RBI to keep the game scoreless.

Butara was dialed in from the first pitch as he retired 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced. White singled with two out in the third, but Jeff Zimmerman was fooled by a Butara offering for strike three. Then after hitting Wells with a pitch in the sixth, the Euclid, Ohio native induced his second double-play ball of the evening off the bat of Jordan Huffman.

In the eighth, Adam Dennison gave the EMU offense a chance at breaking through for the game's first run when he singled up the middle with two out, but John Rubino popped up to second base to end the inning.

Jones led off the NIU ninth with a walk. With two gone and Jones at second after being sacrifice bunted into scoring position, Alex Beckmann hit what appeared to be an inning-ending ground ball to Magsig. Magsig's throw over to first base was short of its target and allowed Jones to round third and score the go-ahead run.

The Eagles did not have an answer for NIU pitching in their final at-bat as Glancy sent them down in order.

The series will continue Saturday afternoon, April 28, at 3 p.m. Please check periodically for scheduling changes as inclement weather in expected.
