YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— Fans at Oestrike Stadium had to wait through a 90-minute rain delay prior to first pitch, but Brent Ohrman's two-run walk-off homer made some extra sitting around well worth it as the Eastern Michigan University baseball team stunned Central Michigan University, 8-7, Sunday afternoon. Ohrman tucked a fly ball just inside the left-field foul pole with two outs in the ninth to snatch the series from the Chippewas.
The Adrian, Mich. native knocked in the game-winning score for the Eagles (16-19; 8-4 MAC) for the second time in the series and pushed his career-best hitting streak to an even 20 games with a 2-for-6 showing and a pair of RBI. All of this came after it appeared he would have to exit the game after crashing into the centerfield wall in the third inning on what would turn out to be an inside-the-park homerun for Nate Theunissen.
Central Michigan (15-21; 6-6 MAC) had EMU down to its final strike in the ninth when Ben Magsig singled up the middle to keep the inning alive. Closing pitcher Dietrich Enns (1-2) then tried to sneak a 1-0 inside heater past Ohrman, but he left it too far over the plate. Ohrman turned on the pitch and brought the crowd to its feet with his first homer of the season.
The Eagles opened up a two-game lead on the Chippewas for first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division with 15 conference games remaining.
Joe Battistelli (2-4) was impressive yet again in two innings of relief, striking out three batters while not allowing a hit. The righty finished the weekend with a win, save and seven strikeouts to his credit.
Ryan Lavoie took a no decision after departing with one out in the third. The freshman had to sit for too long as Ohrman was being looked at by EMU training staff following his incident in centerfield. Lavoie allowed four earned runs on three hits while walking three and fanning one.
Magsig went 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. He has now reached base in 19 straight outings. Sam Ott increased his hitting streak to 12 games Sunday with a 3-for-4 display which included an RBI.
Bo Kinder (2-for-5) and Adam Dennison (2-for-4) also posted two-hit games, with Kinder extending his run of contests in which he has reached base safely to 28. Daniel Russell was hitless on the afternoon, but drew three of Eastern Michigan's seven walks.
For Central Michigan, left hander Rick Dodridge did not record a decision in four innings of work in which he surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits, four walks, and two punchouts.
EMU pitchers limited the Chippewas to just six hits despite issuing seven walks. Theunissen was at it again for CMU, going 2-for-5 with five RBI which included a three-run inside-the-park homer in the third. Tyler Hall had the other RBI for CMU and was 1-for-3 at the dish with a run scored.
After the two clubs threw scoreless frames in the first and second, the Chippewas broke out to a 4-0 lead in the third. Hall started things off with a single to right which scored Nick Reginer.
Then with runners at the corners, Theunissen drilled a line drive to straightaway centerfield. Ohrman gave chase but came up inches short of making a spectacular catch as the ball glanced off his glove. Running full speed, Ohrman collided with the outfield wall and was slow to get up, allowing the ball to roll far enough away to let Theunissen circle the basepaths.
Roughly 10 minutes passed before Ohrman and EMU trainers decided the senior was able to remain in the game. Lavoie departed and Jordan Glover came on to finish the remainder of the inning.
Eastern cut its deficit in half, 4-2, in the bottom of the third as CMU errors were a contributing factor in both tallies. Second baseman Hall bobbled a potential double-play ball with one out to instead allow Magsig to reach base and plate Russell. Ott then singled with two down to drive home John Rubino.
Rubino made it a 4-3 contest in the following inning on a sacrifice fly to right field which scored his older brother, Tucker Rubino.
EMU raced ahead, 6-4, with three more runs in the sixth. Rubino (John) hit a towering fly ball to right field which was dropped by Regnier and allowed the freshman to reach third base. Magsig singled to score Rubino and then came around himself on a Lee Longo sacrifice fly. Kinder finished off the scoring with his eighth double of the season to bring in Ohrman.
The Eagles' lead would not last long, however, as the Chippewas put up a three-spot of their own in the top of the seventh to go ahead, 7-6. Glover, who had been cruising along nicely until that point, hit a batter, gave up a single and walked Hall to load the bases with one out. All three baserunners ended up scoring as Paul Schaak was unable to strand the runners. The inning was highlighted by Theunissen's two-RBI single up the middle.
Battistelli kept the Chippewas off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings to leave it up to the offense. Enns came out of the CMU bullpen in search of his second save in as many games. He looked well on his way to earning that save as he retired Matt Hitt on strikes and Rubino (John) on a flyout.
But the batting order flipped over and an ever-patient Magsig waited for his pitch and drilled a 1-2 offering up the middle to bring the potential winning run, Ohrman, to the dish. Enns missed with his first pitch and optioned for the fastball as his second selection. The pitch ended up on the inner-half of home plate and Ohrman tattooed it just fair down the left-field line to send the Eagles to their first walk-off homerun win of the year and their sixth victory in seven games.
The Eagles' next matchup is against the University of Michigan Wednesday, April 18, in Ann Arbor. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. as EMU looks to sweep the season series with the Wolverines.
