ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team completed a season sweep over the University of Michigan Wednesday, April 18, with a 7-2 victory at the Wilpon Baseball Complex. With the win, the Eagles completed their Big Ten Conference slate with a 3-2 mark.
The Eagles (17-19; 8-4 MAC) feasted on inconsistent Wolverines' (16-22; 3-6 B1G) pitching, which surrendered eight walks despite giving up only seven hits. EMU grew a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 edge with a pair of tallies in the third and added a three-spot in the fourth to round out the scoring
Collin Taylor (2-0) notched the victory in his first start of the season, while benefiting from a triple play in the third inning. The senior needed just 63 pitches to get through five innings in which he scattered three hits and gave up just one earned run. He also struck out four and walked a trio of batters.
Jamie Simpson scored what proved to be the game winning run on a wild pitch in the first inning finished the contest 1-for-3. Sam Ott had a 1-for-4 evening which included a two-RBI double in the third inning.
Lee Longo snapped an 0-for-7 streak over his last two games with a 2-for-4 showing and an RBI. Making his first start in eight games was Austin Williams, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
For the first time in 29 games, Bo Kinder did not reach base in an 0-for-4 evening.
Michigan starter Trent Szkutnik (2-3) was pulled after just one inning of work which he allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits. Logan McAnallen proved most effective for the Wolverines, hurling three scoreless innings.
The top of the Michigan lineup combined for five of the team's six hits on the evening, with lead off man Patrick Biondi and two-hole hitter John DiLaura going 2-for-4. Coley Crank went 1-for-3, and was the unfortunate player to hit into the triple play.
Eastern Michigan opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-out single by Longo. Longo then made it a 2-0 affair when a pitch got by U-M catcher Zach Johnson and allowed the sophomore to score from third base.
Michigan halved the EMU lead in the bottom of that frame as Biondi scored on an infield chopper which was hit too slowly to turn a double play.
Following a scoreless second, Sam Ott hit a blooper into right field which turned into a double. Ott's knock scored Tucker Rubino and Ben Magsig who were standing on second and third base to make it a 4-1 game.
The bottom of the third looked ominous for the Eagles as Michigan put its first two batters on base. Crank then stepped up to the plate and roped a line drive to Magsig at third base. With Michigan in a hit-and-run, the lead runner (Biondi) ran right into Magsig's tag. Magsig then completed the triple play by tossing over to Ott at first base.
The Green and White capitalized on its good fortunes with three more runs in the fourth to pump its lead up to 7-1. Williams hit in the inning's first run on a double to score Matt Hitt. Daniell Russell scored later in the inning on a wild pitch and Williams rounded it out when he came home on a double play.
EMU's bullpen finished the job from that point, allowing just one more run over the final four innings. Brian Valente, Ben Dartnell and Taylor Dimmerling each pitched a scoreless inning with Dimmerling recording a pair of strikeouts. Paul Schaak gave up one earned run and fanned one batter in one inning of work.
The Eagles are back in action Friday-Sunday, April 20-22, when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State University.
