Eagles Swept In MAC Doubleheader at BGSU

EMU drops game one 6-1 before falling 7-1 in game two

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team suffered a pair of losses to host Bowling Green University in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader this afternoon, April 13, falling 6-1 in the opening contest and dropping game two, 7-1. The Eagles fall to 16-23 on the year and 4-6 in conference play, while BGSU improves to 24-15 (8-2 MAC).

A dormant Eagles offense alongside a rough outing for the pitching staff attributed to the Green and White's 6-1 loss in game one. The Eagles tallied just four hits in the contest compared to BGSU's nine.

Jessica Richards, Nellie Coquillard, Sarah Gerber and McKenna Russ registered a hit apiece to complete EMU's offensive efforts. Gerber drove in the lone RBI on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Lindsay Rich (5-8) suffers the loss and faced just four batters, allowing two runs on three hits before being relieved by Jenna Ignowski in the first. Ignowski would strike out six in the remaining six innings while allowing one earned run.

Richards led off the contest with a single to second base and moved to second on her 32nd swipe of the season. A ground out moved her to third, but she would remain stranded as the Falcons' pitching staff captured the final out of the inning.

The home team pushed four runs across in the bottom half of the frame on four hits, including a leadoff solo shot by Hannah Fulk. Rich was replaced by Ignowski after giving up two, but the Falcons would add another pair of runs before the Eagles could close out the inning.

BGSU took advantage of an EMU error in the fourth to increase its lead to five and plated another run in the fifth on Melissa West's RBI-single.

Facing a six-run deficit in the final inning, Russ led off with a double to left field. Amanda Stanton grounded out to the pitcher to move Russ another 60 feet, and Gerber would bring her home with a sacrifice fly to right. The Eagles' late offensive efforts would be too little too late, however, as BGSU recorded the final out to take game one, 6-1.

The Eagles would strike first to start game two, plating one run in the opening inning. Katy Blaharski drew a one-out walk to put the Eagles' first runner on-board in the contest. After stealing second base, Blaharski would eventually be waved around on Amanda Herron's single to left-center field to give EMU a 1-0 lead.

BGSU responded in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on three hits and one EMU error to take a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles threatened retaliation in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Jenn Lucas and Courtney Nicholson placed runners at first and second base with one out for the Green and White, but a strikeout from Richards and a ground out by Blaharski soured the Eagles' chances at chipping away at their deficit.

Rich would step into the circle in the bottom of the fifth after Lauren Wells hit a batter and gave up a base hit. Rich would eventually get the Eagles out of the inning, but not before the Falcons tallied two more runs to increase their lead to four.

The home team would add another two in the sixth on a Fulk two-run homer to eventually walk away with a 7-1 victory in game two.

The loss is charged to Wells (3-10) who allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out three.

Six different Eagles posted hits in the contest, with Herron driving in the lone run on a 1-for-3 effort at the plate.

The Eagles will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when they head to Toledo for a single game at Scott Park Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
