YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
— The Eastern Michigan University softball team will make the 70-mile trip to East Lansing, Mich. to play a single game with the Spartans of Michigan State University today, April 11 at Secchia Stadium.

The Eagles (15-21, 4-4 MAC) will face the Spartans (11-26, 0-9 BIG 10) for the 38th time in program history. MSU leads the all-time series 11-26 and was victorious in the teams' previous meeting on May 5 last season, outscoring the Eagles at home, 9-2.

The last time the Eagles defeated the Spartans dates back to the 2006 campaign where EMU captured a 2-0 win on the road. The victory also represented the first time EMU had shutout a Big 10 opponent since the 1996 season. In that game, former EMU first baseman Ashley Strauss finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Lauren Clark drove in the Eagles' other run.  Current EMU assistant Nikki Greathouse also competed in that contest for the Spartans, registering a single to right field as part of her 1-for-3 performance in the ballgame.

Currently, Michigan State is led by Kylene Hopkins' 4.08 batting average. The junior has collected 42 hits in 37 games and leads the team with a .500 on-base percentage this season. As a team, the Spartans are currently hitting .263 overall.

In the circle, MSU's Carly Nielsen leads the Spartans' staff with a 6.07 ERA in 83.0 innings pitched for a 3-11 mark on the year. As a staff, MSU hurlers own a 6.65 ERA and have allowed opposing hitters to achieve a .354 batting average through 37 games in 2012.

The Eagles will look to bounce back from an offensive lull this past weekend, as Eagles struggled in their home opening weekend at Varsity Field, going 1-3 after meeting with Northern Illinois and Western Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Green and White averaged just 3.5 hits/game throughout the weekend, totaling just 14 hits in four games and hit just .159 overall.

Live stats for today's contest will be available on EMUEagles.com. First pitch is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
