YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team completes its home-and-home season series with Michigan State University Wednesday afternoon, April 11, at McLane Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. The Eagles (13-18; 6-3 MAC) are 1-2 versus Big Ten Conference opponents this season and dropped a 6-1 decision in their first meeting with the Spartans (19-10; 3-3 B1G), April 4.
The Green and White is coming off a series sweep of Mid-American Conference West Division rival Western Michigan University, April 6-8, which vaulted the club into first place in the division. Over three games, the Eagles tallied 37 runs and hit .339 (39-for-115) to erase a 1 1/2 game deficit to push WMU down into second place. Eastern Michigan saw seven players reached base safely in all three games and complied an OPS of .919.
For their efforts in Kalamazoo, the Eagles were a College Baseball Insider honorable mention selection for the week, and joined the ranks of the University of Kentucky and the University of Oregon in that regard.
Brent Ohrman was selected the Mid-American Conference's West Division Player of the Week and freshman hurler Ryan Lavoie the Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday, April 9. Ohrman went 2-for-5 in the series finale with WMU to complete a 10-for-15 (.667) weekend at the dish with a slugging percentage of .776.
The Adrian, Mich. native went 4-for-5 in each of the first two games to become the first Eagle to have more than three hits in multiple contests this season. Ohrman has now registered a hit in 16 straight games (a career high) and is the first EMU ballplayer to do so this season. He is second on the team in hitting with a .347 batting average and is leading the squad with 14 swiped bags.
Lavoie (3-1) provided the stability the Eagles were looking for on the mound in a 9-5 win Sunday. The freshman posted a seven-inning, 11-strikeout performance, which easily surpassed his previous career high of five. He limited a potent WMU lineup to four earned runs on nine hits while only issuing one free pass.
The Eagles enter Wednesday's contest looking for some revenge against a Spartans squad which outpitched them a week ago at Oestrike Stadium. Austin Williams went 1-for-3 and drove in EMU's lone score as MSU limited Jay Alexander's squad to six hits. MSU benefited from a five-run sixth inning to notch the 6-1 victory.
Brian Valente (0-3) will make his fifth start of the season he goes in search of his first win. The redshirt junior has an ERA of 8.17 and will look to get his season back on track against an MSU team hitting .285 on the year. The Eagles have pumped their batting average up to .290 and will go against a Spartans pitching staff which carries a 2.84 ERA.
A win against the Spartans would run the Eagles' current winning streak to a season-high four games.
The Spartans snapped a three-game losing skid when they salvaged the final contest in a three-game weekend set with the University of Michigan, 10-8, in 13 innings. MSU will host the University of Notre Dame before playing EMU Wednesday.
