Eastern scored 12 runs in the third to open the scoring and never looked back

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team extended its winning streak to four games, the longest of the 2012 season, Wednesday, April 11, when it lambasted Michigan State University on the road. The Eagles used a 12-run outburst in the third inning to take the lead and never looked back as they cruised to the 13-5 victory at McLane Baseball Stadium.

Eastern (14-18; 6-3 MAC) evened up the 2012 series with the Spartans (20-11; 3-3 B1G) Wednesday afternoon after dropping the first game of the series, April 4, at Oestrike Stadium, 6-1. The Eagles used 15 hits, including a triple and pair of doubles, to score their 13 runs, while MSU was held to five runs on 12 hits. The Eagles were flawless defensively, while the Spartans made one error in the field.

Brent Ohrman connected on a one-out single in the third to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, the longest of his career. The Adrian, Mich. native went 2-for-5 in the game with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Bo Kinder reached base safely in his 25th straight game and went 1-for-5 with a run scored. Jamie Simpson drove in four runs after going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Daniel Russell and Ben Magsig turned in multi-hit games for EMU on 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 performances. Russell was able to cross home plate on three occasions while Magsig scored one run. Matt Hitt went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, while John Rubino was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Brian Valente (1-3) earned his first win of the 2012 campaign Wednesday afternoon by hurling five innings for EMU and allowing three runs on seven hits to the Spartans. Valente did not walk a batter and struck out three in the win.

The Eagles had a quartet of relievers hold off Michigan State as Ben Dartnell and Jeffrey Rousseau each threw a scoreless inning for EMU, while Paul Schaak allowed a pair of runs, one earned in an inning of work. Taylor Dimmerling closed out the game for Eastern pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Green and White opened the scoring in the third with a 12-spot, as they recorded nine hits in the inning. Ohrman drove in the first runs of the game with a two-run single to center field. Simpson knocked-in Magsig and Ohrman with a one-out single to left field and Hitt followed it up with a three-run bomb, his fourth of the season. Russell was later able to drive Kinder home on a single through the left side and Rubino scored his brother Tucker Rubino on a fielding error.

Ohrman later picked up his third RBI of the inning on a fielder's choice that scored Russell. Simpson added another pair of RBI when he doubled to right field and scored Ohrman and John Rubino to give Eastern the 12-0 lead in the early going.

Michigan State responded with a run in the fourth. Torsten Boss scored on a double-play ball hit by Justin Scanlon to make the score 12-1.

In the fifth, the Spartans were able to score a pair. Jared Hook reached on a one-out single to center and was driven in by Andy Johnson, who drilled a double to center field. Johnson later scored on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Jones to cut the Eagles lead to 12-3.

Eastern added a run in the seventh after Russell tripled to open the inning, Rubino drove him in with a single up the middle, giving EMU a 13-3 edge.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Spartans rallied for a pair of runs. Jones led off the inning with a single through the right side and advanced to second as Boss walked in the following at-bat. The pair of runners advanced a bag apiece after a passed ball and later scored on a Ryan Krill single, making it 13-5 in favor of the Green and White.

The Eagles are off for a day before starting a three-game series with Central Michigan University. The Chippewas will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. for a weekend series with the first game starting at 6 p.m. Friday, April 13.
