YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University wrestlers Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) and Wes Schroeder (heavyweight) will join Jared Germaine (125 lbs.) and Phillip Joseph (174 lbs.) at the 2012 NCAA Championships after receiving at-large bids Wednesday, March 7, to the national tournament. The Eagles will have four representatives at the event for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

The 2012 tournament will mark the seventh straight year in which Eastern Michigan has sent at least one wrestler to the competition. This year's NCAA Championships will run March 15-17 in St. Louis, Mo.

Germaine and Joseph had already earned automatic bids to the tournament after placing third and second at 125 lbs. and 174 lbs., respectively, at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Sulzer also took runner-up honors at 157 lbs., but had to wait for an at-large selection due to the MAC's allotment of only one automatic slot at that weight class. Schroeder took fourth at heavyweight in the conference tournament and was invited to compete nationally as well.

Sulzer heads back to the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive season as a redshirt junior. The co-captain and MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week recipient is 20-9 this year and won his 20th match in the conference tournament against Kent State University's Mallie Shuster.

Sulzer's first-round match will pit him against No. 9 Justin Lister (26-5) of Binghamton. The two wrestlers met once already earlier in the season, with Lister edging out an 8-4 decision.

Both Germaine and Joseph are redshirt sophomores who will make their national debuts this season. Germaine carries a 23-9 overall record into the competition. He has defeated a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers this season and cracked the nation's top-30 earlier in the year. Germaine's first-round match will arguably be the toughest of his young career as he squares off with No. 1 Matt McDonough (31-1) of Iowa.

Coming off an injury in 2010-11 which kept him sidelined, Joseph has gone 19-9 this year and posted a mark of 5-2 against conference opponents. The Lapeer, Mich. native will face Seth Creasy (17-13) of Lockhaven as his first round opponent.

Schroeder, also a MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week winner, will step onto the national scene for the first time in his career after posting an 18-15 record this season. By qualifying for the national competition, Schroeder makes it three straight years in which an EMU heavyweight has competed at the event. David Wade represented the Eagles the previous two seasons at 285 lbs.

The Manitou Beach, Mich. native will have a chance to avenge an 8-4 loss from earlier in the year when he faces Kevin Lester (31-10) from Columbia in the opening round.
