ST. LOUIS, Mo. (EMUEagles.com)-- Three of the four Eastern Michigan University representatives in the 2012 NCAA Championships posted 1-1 records on day one of the tournament Thursday, March 15, to remain in competition at the double-elimination event. Heavyweight Wes Schroeder advanced to the second round of the championship bracket before falling to the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country.
Schroeder upended Columbia University's Kevin Lester in his first match, 5-2, for his 19th win of the season. With his win, the redshirt senior became the first Eastern Michigan student-athlete to advance in the championship bracket since Phillip Plowman (133 lbs.) accomplished the feat at the 2006 tournament.
The Manitou Beach, Mich. native fell to the consolation bracket after a second-round defeat to top-seeded Ryan Flores from American University. Flores won by pin at the 4:23 mark, and was the only wrestler in the entire tournament to finish the day winning every match by way of a fall.
At 125 lbs., redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine also came against a No. 1 wrestler in Iowa University's Matt McDonough. McDonough pinned Germaine to the mat at 3:24. The Saginaw, Mich. native rebounded in his first match of wrestlebacks by topping Vincent Rodriguez of George Mason University, 4-1.
No. 9 Justin Lister got the best of redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer for a second time this season in the first round of the 157 lbs. bracket, 7-3. Unshaken, Sulzer took care of Bobby Barnhisel from Navy in his next match, 8-3.
Redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph was the only Eagle to wrestle three matches Thursday. Joseph opened the 174 lbs. bracket against No. 6 Ryan DesRoches of California Polytechnic State University, where he came up on the losing end of a 7-6 decision. Joseph then staved off elimination by getting the better of Brown University's Dave Foxen, 8-4, before bowing out of the competition after dropping a 7-3 decision to Greg Zannetti from Rutgers University.
Day two of competition will begin Friday morning, March 16, at 10 a.m. with the tournament's third session. The fourth session is set to begin at 6 p.m. Germaine's first match of the day will pit him against No. 11 Matthew Snyder from the University of Virginia, while Sulzer faces Tommy Churchard of Purdue University and Schroeder battles No. 11 Tucker Lane from the University of Nebraska.
