ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team scored 49 points for a third place finish at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships Sunday, March 4, on the campus of Ohio University. Seven out of 10 EMU wrestlers earned top-four finishes including Jared Germaine (125 lbs.) and Phillip Joseph (174 lbs.), who earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.

The Eagles' seven placewinners eclipsed the 2006-07 team's mark of six and was just one shy the 1995-96 team's eight placers. A third place finish was also good for the team's highest finish since the 1995-96 squad captured the MAC team championship.

Phillips was one of four Eagles to turn in a runner-up performance at the annual tournament. Andrew Novak (133 lbs.), Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) and Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.) also claimed second place honors, but were not guaranteed placement in the national tournament as only the champion of those weight classes was awarded an automatic slot.

With the 125 lbs. weight class receiving a MAC-high four guaranteed spots at the NCAA tournament, Germaine's third-place showing was more than enough to qualify.

Also placing for the Eagles at the event were Corey Phillips (149 lbs.) and Wes Schroeder (heavyweight), who each grappled to fourth place finishes.

Jaylyn Bohl (149 lbs.), Lester France (165 lbs.) and Mike Curby (184 lbs.) also competed Sunday, but went winless on the day.

Central Michigan University claimed an 11th straight team championship, amassing 89 points and capturing five individual titles. Kent State University was runner-up with 79 points, while Ohio University was fourth (41.5), Northern Illinois University took fifth (41) and the University at Buffalo settled for sixth (27.5).

Joe Roth from CMU was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

After dropping a 6-2 decision to top-ranked Nic Bedelyon of Kent State, Germaine took care of Buffalo's Max Soria, 11-5, and then NIU's Nick Smith, 9-6, to secure third place at 125 lbs.

Novak rebounded following a 2-1 overtime loss to eventual 133 lbs. champion Zach Horan to knock off Drew Hammer from OU in the second round, 8-4. The redshirt senior claimed a swift victory in the third-place bout over Steve Mitcheff of KSU at the 1:11 mark.

The win earned Novak a chance to wrestle for second place against Northern Illinois' Rob Jillard after he lost in the championship match against Horan. Novak outlasted Jillard, 5-3, to take runner-up honors.

Phillips' lone victory of the day was a convincing 7-0 shutout over Darrin Boing from Ohio. The redshirt senior fell in the third-place match to Central's Scott Mattingly, 16-4.

Both of Sulzer's matches were nail-biting affairs. His first match was a 3-2 triumph over KSU's Mallie Shuster. The victory earned him a spot in the title match where he lost a close 4-1 decision to rival Donnie Corby from CMU.

After Joseph dispatched of Buffalo's Jake Waste, 3-1, he met up with Ohio's Nick Purdue in what was arguably the most entertaining match of the tournament. Joseph trailed by as many as three, 6-3, to Purdue, but rallied to take a 9-8 lead. With the score 10-8 in favor of Joseph, Purdue notched a takedown to tie the score at 10-all in the final minute. Joseph was unable to force an overtime period, as Purdue fought to the decisive takedown with five seconds remaining for a 12-10 final.

Whitenburg's opening-round victory was a hard-fought 5-3 decision over CMU's Craig Kelliher. The redshirt sophomore then came up just short against top-ranked Keith Witt from Kent State, 5-2, and had to settle for second place.

Finally, Schroeder won a pair of matches on the afternoon over Buffalo's Jedd Mason, 9-0, and Jared Torrence of NIU, 3-2. Schroeder was edged by Peter Sturgeon, 5-3, in the battle for third place.
