Eagles Drop Extra-Innings Thriller to No. 3 Florida

EMU out hits Gators in extra-innings loss

Box Score.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)
– Despite outhitting No. 3 ranked University of Florida this evening, the Eastern Michigan University softball team suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1 loss in extra innings to the Gators today, March 1, at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

After completing the first extra-innings contest for either team, EMU drops to 2-8 on the year, while Florida improves to 14-1 overall.

The Eagles pitching staff put forth a tremendous effort against a potent Gator offense that averaged 8.29 hits per game. The trio of Jenna Ignowski, Lindsay Rich and Lauren Wells held their opponent to just two hits this evening, representing the fewest tallied by the Gators this season.

The Eagles connected on three hits in the setback, with McKenna Russ, Allison Scherer and Nellie Coquillard contributing with one hit apiece.

Russ got the Green and White's offense going in the top of the second inning with a double that soared to left center field. A textbook sacrifice bunt by Scherer moved Russ to third base, presenting a possible RBI opportunity for Coquillard. The junior did not disappoint, pushing a single to right field to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Florida knotted the score at one apiece on a Kelsey Horton two-out single to centerfield to score Brittany Schutte from second base.

After securing two outs the bottom of the fifth, EMU made a pitching change and sent in Rich to relieve Ignowski of her duties in the circle. Ignowski would leave the game with 4.2 innings under her belt, striking out three while holding Florida to one earned run on just two hits.

Rich did not disappoint as she shut down the Gators offensively, holding UF hitless in the next 2.2 innings of play.

After neither team managed to score in regulation, the international tiebreaker rule was implemented in the eighth inning of play.

Lindsay Smith checked in to pinch run for Courtney Nicholson and was placed at second base in the Eagles' hopes of some late-inning heroics.  A sacrifice bunt moved Smith to third but that would be as far as she would go as the home team recorded the next to outs to take its chance at securing an extra-innings victory.

Lefty hurler Wells (0-5) would take the mound with one out in the eighth and runners at second and third in an attempt to match up with UF's left handed hitter, Schutte, but Schutte managed to drive a ground ball deep enough in the infield to score a runner from third base and give the Gators the 2-1 win.

The Eagles will seek redemption tomorrow afternoon, as they will face the Gators in a 4 p.m. meeting in their second game of the 2012 Lipton Invitational. EMU will play Campbell in its opening contest in the invite with first pitch scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
