Eagles Struggle In First Day of Lipton Invite

EMU falls to Campbell, 5-0, before dropping a 16-0 decision to Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its first two games in the 2012 Lipton Invitational this afternoon, March 2, hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. EMU fell 5-0 to Campbell before dropping a 15-0 decision in five innings to the Gators.
The Eagles (2-10) offense was shut out in both contests, scattering just five hits between two losses this afternoon.
In the Green and White's setback to Campbell, Jessica Richards accounted for both of EMU's hits in the contest with singles in the first and third innings of play.
Lauren Wells was issued the loss and falls to 0-6 on the year. The sophomore went just 1.2 innings, giving up four runs on three hits before being replaced by freshman Lindsay Rich.
Rich finished the remaining 5.1 innings with three strike outs, holding opposing hitters to four hits and one run.
In the second game of the day, Richards, Amanda Herron and Jenn Lucas were the lone Eagles to register hits against the Gators.
Three members of EMU's pitching staff saw innings in the setback, with Rich taking the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year. She gave up five runs in 1.1 innings before being relieved by Jenna Ignowski. Ignowski did not have much better luck against the Gators, giving up five earned runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Jessica Wilkes closed out the final 1.1 innings allowing four hits and four earned runs.
Florida plated runs in each inning of play, while the Eagles failed to retaliate, allowing the Gators to secure a 16-run win over EMU.
The Green and White will play two tomorrow in the second day of the Lipton Invite against Gardner-Webb and Campbell. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
