After the IPFW match, the Eagles are idle for 19 days
Complete Release.
EAGLES TO HOST IPFW BEFORE LONG LAYOFF: Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will return home after six straight road dual matches to host IPFW Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Racket Club in Ypsilanti.
After that Friday tilt, the Eagles will be idle for 19 days before traveling to Honolulu, Hawai'i for matches Feb. 29 and March 1. Eastern will play host Hawai'i, Feb. 29, and will face off against Iowa State, March 1. On the trip back from Hawai'a the Eagles will play at Loyola-Marymount, March 3, in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Eagles are 3-5 on the young season after running into two nationally ranked squads last weekend and dropping both matches.
Playing in the University of Nebraska Indoor Tennis Facility last weekend, the Eagles dropped a 6-1 decision to 75th ranked Wyoming Friday, Feb. 3, and came back Saturday, Feb. 4, and fell to the 29th ranked University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.
EMU's lone point of the weekend came from freshman Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) who defeated Wyoming's Silviya Zhelzaykova, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3, at No. 5 singles on Friday. Ray was forced to adjust his lineup after the Wyoming match after Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-Aia-gess English-Spanish School) dropped out of the second set at No. 1 singles with an injury.
MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia) was named Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, Jan. 30. She turned in a 4-0 weekend in singles and doubles. Normally the No. 2 singles player, Mebuke moved up to No. 1 with the regular No. 1 player, Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Tomas a Kempis), slowed down by the flu. Mebuke defeated UD's Elena Strakhova, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles Friday, Jan. 27, and came back and beat Michigan State's Nicole Herzog, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles Sunday, Jan. 29.
