Weber takes no-hitter into the seventh inning
Box Score.
TULSA, Okla. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team rode a combined two-hit performance from Steve Weber and Neil Butara to a 3-1 victory over Oral Roberts University here Saturday, Feb. 25., at J.L. Johnson Stadium. Weber carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and received just enough offensive support to lead the Eagles to their first win of the season.
Weber (1-1) faced the minimum 18 batters through the first six innings, giving up a leadoff walk in the fifth but getting an inning-ending double play. Kevin Cho broke up the no-hit bid to lead off the seventh inning, when he reached on an infield single and eventually came around to score.
The North Royalton, Ohio native tossed six and two-thirds innings while allowing just one run and striking out four Golden Eagles.
Butara was just as effective in his first appearance of the season, earning the save after pitching two and one-thirds innings while striking out three and giving up no hits. The junior reliever needed just 22 pitches to record the final seven outs of the contest.
The Eagles (1-3) scored all three runs in the fifth inning, with Lee Longo accounting for a pair of RBI and Ben Magsig recording the other. Longo had another solid afternoon at the dish with a 2-for-5 performance. Magsig went 1-for-3 and walked twice to give him a team-leading five free passes on the season.
Bo Kinder, Brent Ohrman and Adam Dennison all scored for the Eagles.
Kurt Giller (0-2) took the loss for ORU (1-5), surrendering three runs (one earned) and walking four Eastern Michigan batters.
Cho and Jared Schlehuber were the only Golden Eagles to record hits on the afternoon, with Cho going 1-for-4 with a run scored and Schlehuber hitting 1-for-3.
Eastern Michigan threatened in the first inning, putting two baserunners on with two outs. Magsig worked his first of two walks on the afternoon and Longo singled up the middle. Sam Ott flied out to centerfield and the game remained scoreless.
Oral Roberts' sloppy infield defensive play to begin the fifth inning allowed both Dennison and Kinder to reach on errors with no outs. Magsig made the Golden Eagles pay with an RBI single to plate Dennison and put EMU head, 1-0. Longo added a pair of runs when he drove in speedsters Ohrman and Kinder with a single to left field.
Mike Torrence came into the game in relief of Giller following Longo's single, and held EMU off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. ORU scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, but was otherwise held at bay by a stingy Eastern Michigan pitching staff.
The rubber match of this three-game series begins Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. ET.
