YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team makes the short trek to Ann Arbor to face Michigan and Duke at the UM Tri-Meet Saturday, Dec. 8. The Eagles (3-4; 0-1 MAC) take on the Blue Devils (1-1) at noon and square off with the No. 13 Wolverines (4-1) at 4 p.m.

DOUBLE THE EXCITEMENT IN ANN ARBOR: Eastern Michigan has already defeated a nationally-ranked opponent this season and looks to make it two straight wins against top-25 teams after a disappointing start to the MAC season, when the Eagles lost to Ohio, Dec. 2.

“I think our team has adjusted to the dual meet format and our wrestlers are coming into their style nicely,” said seventh-year Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “We are competing at a high level and need to continue to win the close matches. We absolutely cannot give up bonus points.  I truly believe we have only lost to one tea that was better than us so far.”

BAKER'S DOZEN: The Eagles and No. 13 Wolverines will be meeting for the 13th time since the two schools first squared off in 1968-69. That season, Michigan bested EMU, 27-6, Feb. 8, 1969, in Ypsilanti to clinch its first of 12 consecutive victories against the Green and White. The two squads last faced each other Dec. 30, 2007, when UM pulled away with a 33-6 win in Ann Arbor. The closest an EMU team has ever come to beating the Wolverines was a 29-16 setback Dec. 14, 2003.

THE ROARING 20s: It has been awhile since EMU and Duke have met on the mat. In fact, the wrestling was not yet a varsity sport at Eastern Michigan when the two teams clashed twice in 1927 and 1928, when Duke won on both occasions. Saturday's match with the Blue Devils will mark the first meeting between the two teams in 84 years and the first since EMU's first official season of varsity wrestling in 1956-57.

In 1928, Calvin Coolidge was President of the United States, General Electric introduced a television set with a 3” X 4” screen and Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.

SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES: Michigan enters the weekend ranked 13th in the nation and owns a 4-1 record in dual-meets. UM has already beaten a pair of nationally-ranked opponents this season including Oregon State and Pittsburgh, but lost to Central Michigan for its only loss of the year.

Individually, the Wolverines boast four grapplers in the top-25 including Eric Grajales (18th at 149 lbs.), Taylor Massa (18th at 165 lbs.), Dan Yates (10th at 174 lbs.) and Max Huntley (16th at 197 lbs.).

“Michigan is ranked in the top-20 so it will be nice to see where we stand with them,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, whose Eagles last faced UM in 2008. “ We have only wrestled them one time since I have been here, so it will be nice to get something started with them again.”

SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS: Duke will compete in just its third regular-season tussle of the 2012-13 campaign when it tangles with the Eagles Saturday in Ann Arbor. The Bule Devils dropped their season opener to nationally-ranked Northwestern and bounced back with a win against Stevens Tech. The team returns nine starters from last season, including NCAA Tournament qualifier Tanner Hough at 141 lbs. Other top returners include redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci and redshirt senior Peter Terrezza at 133 lbs. and 125 lbs., respectively.

MAC SEASON OPENS WITH NAIL-BITER IN ATHENS: EMU dropped a tightly-contested 17-16 Mid-American Conference dual-meet on the road to Ohio University Sunday evening, Dec. 2. The Eagles saw their three-match winning streak snapped while the Bobcats notched their first win of the season.

The lead changed four times, with EMU holding a 16-14 edge headed into the final bout of the evening. But that lead would not hold as Phil Wellington got the best of redshirt freshman Anthony Abro at 197 lbs. by a narrow 4-2 margin to give the Bobcats the victory.

“We wrestled pretty well,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Our effort was high and we cannot get caught up in just wins and losses. We won five and they won five, they just had one more bonus point than us.”

EAGLES OVERCOME VIKINGS AT BOWEN: The Eagles overcame a six-point deficit by winning the last three matches against Cleveland State to sink the Vikings for  a sixth season in-a-row. CSU held the lead until the 184 lbs. match until redshirt junior Phillip Joseph knotted the contest at 15 apiece with a pin of Bobby Blankenship at the 2:30 mark. At 197 lbs. redshirt freshman Anthony Abro gave the Eagles an 18-15 edge with a decision, and heavyweight Chris Eggert used a strong third period to win by decision and seal the victory for the home team.

Two matches went into overtime as redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer got past Matt Donohoe at 157 lbs. and redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla needed the extra period to defeat Corey Carlo at 165 lbs.
