Sulzer goes 2-0, Davis wins first regular-season dual
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split a pair of matches at the University of Michigan Tri-Meet Saturday, Dec. 8, defeating Duke University, 30-9, and falling to No. 14 Michigan, 32-3.
The Eagles (4-5; 0-1 MAC) began the afternoon with a convincing 30-9 victory over the Blue Devils (1-3), winning seven matches overall and notching bonus points on five occasions. EMU experienced less success against the nationally-ranked Wolverines (6-1), winning just one match en route to the 32-3 setback.
"We started the day off with a great team effort against Duke," remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto. "We just could not get anything going for us against U of M. There were more positives than negatives today so we will move forward from here and get ready for Indiana."
Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer posted a 2-0 afternoon at 157 lbs., pinning Duke's Andrew DeHart and claiming an 8-5 decision over Michael Carpenter of Michigan. Sulzer moves to 9-4 on the season and 6-3 in regular-season action.
After turning in a solid 12-2 record in tournament matches this season, freshman Jacob Davis got the nod from Coach DelPorto at 174 lbs. against Duke. Davis' first-career bout resulted in a definitive 8-0 major-decision shutout of Trey Adamson.
Redshirt junior Jared Germaine needed just over two minutes to pin Peter Terrezza at 125 lbs. to start EMU off with a 6-0 lead against the Blue Devils. Duke would claim the next three matches to take a 9-6 lead, but the Eagles responded by rattling off victories in the final six matches of the bout.
Sulzer put the Eagles back on top, 12-6, with his first pin of the regular season against Andrew DeHart at the 2:15 mark of the 157 lbs. tussle. Redshirt freshman Jacob Dorulla (165 lbs.), Davis (174 lbs.) and redshirt junior Phillip Joseph (184 lbs.) all recorded major decisions to clinch the match for EMU with two weight classes remaining. redshirt freshman Anthony Abro and redshirt senior Chris Eggert continued EMU's winning ways with decisions at 197 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively.
Michigan jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Sulzer stopped the Wolverines' streak of four-straight wins against DeHart. The Eagles would get no closer, but held Michigan to decisions in seven of their nine victories. Dorulla and Davis each competed hard against a pair of nationally-ranked grapplers, with Dorulla losing to No. 10 Taylor Massa, 9-4, and Davis dropping a 6-2 decision to No. 14 Dan Yates.
The Eagles return home for a match against Indiana University Sunday, Dec. 16. The dual-meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start inside Bowen Field House.
