YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team competes in its final dual-meet of the 2012 calendar year Sunday, Dec. 16, against Indiana University at Bowen Field House at 1 p.m. The contest marks the third at home this season for an Eagles' (4-5; 0-1 MAC) squad which split its first two matches in Ypsilanti this season.
Indiana (5-3; 0-1 B1G) represents EMU's third Big Ten Conference opponent of the season. The Eagles are looking for their first win against a team from the Indianapolis, Ind.-based conference since defeating Michigan State to kick off the 2011-12 campaign.
HOOSIERS AT A GLANCE: Indiana enters the match reeling after a 52-0 shutout at the hands of No. 1 Penn State, Dec. 9. The Hoosiers had won three matches in-a-row prior to their meeting with the Nittany Lions. Northern Illinois has already faced Indiana this year, Nov. 10, and came away with a 19-13 victory.
A trio of IU grapplers earned top-25 nods for the week of Dec. 10. Heavyweight Adam Chalfant is ranked ninth nationally, while Ryan LeBlanc owns the No. 17 spot at 165 lbs. and Taylor Walsh holds down the No. 25 seed at 157 lbs.
“I expect us to wrestle from whistle to whistle trying to score as many points as we can,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “I think it is going to be a very close dual and we will have to wrestle really well to beat them.
ALL-TIME SERIES WITH IU: The Eagles and Hoosiers have met 10 times prior to Sunday's clash at Bowen. IU has won every meeting in the series which began Dec. 16, 1967, when the Hoosiers came away with a 24-10 victory. The closest the Eagles have come to beating Indiana was by three, 20-17, Jan. 17, 2004. Additionally, Sunday will mark just the second time (Jan. 7, 1977) that IU has journeyed to Ypsilanti.
The two teams last squared off Dec. 19, 2010 in Bloomington, Ind., where current Eagles Jared Germaine (125 lbs.), Mike LeHolm (141 lbs.) and Chris Eggert (174 lbs.) were all victorious in their matches.
SULZER HEATING UP: Following an uncharacteristic 0-3 start to the 2012-13 dual-meet season, redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer has found his stride of late, winning his last six matches in-a-row. The two-time NCAA qualifier has led his team to a 4-2 record over the six-match span which includes a win over previously-ranked North Dakota State, Nov. 24.
“Aaron was putting too much pressure on himself,” remarked Coach Derek DelPorto on Sulzer's slow start. “He has such high expectations that he was worried about losing more than he was trying to win. He has realized this and finally snapped out of it.”
Sulzer went 2-0 at the Michigan Tri-Meet, Dec. 8, with a pin and a decision to improve his record to 9-4 and 6-3 in regular-season duals. The 157-pounder has 78 career wins to his credit, which ties him for seventh all-time in EMU laurels with Doug Harper (1988-89).
DAVIS NABS FIRST DUAL WIN: After turning in a solid 12-2 record in tournament matches this season, freshman Jacob Davis got the nod at 174 lbs. against Duke. Davis' first-career bout resulted in a definitive 8-0 major-decision shutout of Trey Adamson. The North Ridgeville, Ohio native became the fourth EMU wrestler to earn his first regular-season victory this season, joining redshirt freshmen Vincent Pizzuto and Justin Melick along with redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla.
EAGLES EARN SPLIT AT MICHIGAN TRI-MEET: The Eagles split a pair of matches at the University of Michigan Tri-Meet Saturday, Dec. 8, defeating Duke University, 30-9, and falling to No. 14 Michigan, 32-3.
The Eagles began the afternoon with a convincing win over the Blue Devils, taking seven matches overall and notching bonus points on five occasions. EMU experienced less success against the nationally-ranked Wolverines, winning just one match en route to the 32-3 setback.
Redshirt junior Jared Germaine needed just over two minutes to pin Peter Terrezza at 125 lbs. to start EMU off with a 6-0 lead against the Blue Devils. Duke would claim the next three matches to take a 9-6 lead, but the Eagles responded by rattling off victories in the final six matches of the bout.
RAW DATA: Eastern Michigan wrestlers have posted an overall record of 162-138 (.540) through Dec. 10. That mark includes a 41-49 (.456) showing in regular-season duals and a 121-89 (.576) record in open tournament action. Freshman Devan Marry leads all EMU wrestlers with six pins, while Aaron Sulzer has a team-best two technical falls. Vincent Pizzuto and Jacob Davis each have four major decisions to lead the way and freshman Nicholas Barber has a team-high nine decisions.
MIDLANDS ON THE HORIZON: From Dec. 29-30, the Eagles will make their traditional post-Christmas trek to The Midlands, one of the most anticipated and highly-competitve mid-season tournaments. The 2012 Midlands marks the 50th year for the annual event hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Last season, Jared Germaine became the first EMU wrestler to place at the event since Derek DelPorto took over as head coach. Germaine outlasted nationally-ranked Trent Sprenkle of North Dakota State University in the seventh place match at 125 lbs., 5-4.
