EMU and OU swap lead four times
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a nail-biting 17-16 Mid-American Conference dual-meet on the road to Ohio University Sunday evening, Dec. 2. The Eagles (3-4; 0-1 MAC) saw their three-match winning streak snapped while the Bobcats (1-1; 1-1 MAC) notched their first win of the season.
The lead in Sunday's contest changed four times, with EMU holding a 16-14 edge headed into the final bout of the evening. But that lead would not hold as Phil Wellington got the best of redshirt freshman Anthony Abro at 197 lbs. by a narrow 4-2 margin to give the Bobcats the victory.
“We wrestled pretty well,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Our effort was high and we cannot get caught up in just wins and losses. We won five and they won five, they just had one more bonus point than us.”
Action started at heavyweight where No. 14 Jeremy Johnson earned four team points for OU with a major decision of Chris Eggert, 13-4. The Green and White responded with three straight wins as redshirt junior No. 16 Jared Germaine starting things off with a 13-8 decision over KeVon Powell at 125 lbs.
Redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto rebounded from a tough outing Friday against Cleveland State to the tune of a 13-5 major decision over Angelo DiSabato at 133 lbs. The win gave Eastern Michigan its first lead, 7-4. At 141 lbs., redshirt junior Seth Schaner grew EMU's lead to six points when he defeated Kagan Squire, 5-3.
The six-point edge remained with four matches to go as redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer answered Andrew Romanchik's decision at 149 lbs. with a 4-0 shutout of Sparty Chino at 157 lbs.
Ohio regained its lead with a pair of victories at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. After Harrison Hightower's 10-2 major decision over redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla, Cody Walters bested redshirt sophomore Mike Curby by decision, 9-4, to make it a 14-13 lead for the Bobcats with two bouts left.
Redshirt junior Phillip Joseph flipped the score again in favor of the Eagles with his second win of the weekend, a 9-4 victory over Ryan Garringer at 184 lbs. Joseph's effort would not be enough however, nor would Abro's, as Wellington scratched out a decision in the final bout of the evening.
The Eagles are back in action when they face the Duke University and University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. Saturday, Dec. 8. Match times are set for noon and 4 p.m., respectively.
