YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team goes in search of its first victory of the 2012-13 campaign Saturday, Nov. 24, at the NDSU Quad in Fargo, N.D. The Eagles (0-2) will open the day with a 1 p.m. tussle against No. 2 Minnesota, with two additional contests against Itasca C.C. at 3 p.m. and host North Dakota State at 5 p.m.
STARTING OFF ON TOP: EMU will have little time to shake off any post-Thanksgiving cobwebs at Saturday's NDSU Quad. The Eagles face No. 2 Minnesota, which was ranked as high as No. 1 in preseason polls. The Golden Gophers placed runner-up at last year's NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. and return seven of its nine national qualifiers from a year ago.
“I think this is a great opportunity,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “We set our schedule to favor individual performances and nine of their 10 starters are ranked in the top-10. Minnesota has been a national championship contender since I can remember. We need to fight them as hard as we possibly can.”
IT DOESN'T END THERE: Following the bout with Minnesota, the Eagles will grapple with Itasca C.C. and North Dakota State. Campbell was originally slated to be the fourth team at the meet, but the small junior college in Grand Rapids, Minn. took the Camels' spot once they dropped out. Itasca has been a very successful squad in the NJCAA, fighting to a sixth-place finish at the 2012 National Tournament.
The Bison come into the weekend with a 1-0 record, with their win coming against No. 24 Boise State by a margin of 24-15. NDSU also boasts a trio of nationally ranked wrestlers.
“NDSU is a great team,” remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “They have a lot of talent and I expect that dual to be a grind. We have to be on top of our game to win that match. If we are off just a little bit, it will be very difficult to win that dual. It should be fun.”
IT'S NO JOKE: Head Coach Derek DelPorto, who has become known for scheduling the toughest competition in the country, has lived up to that reputation once again this season. The Eagles will face five teams ranked in the top-25 nationally this season including No. 2 Minnesota Saturday at the NDSU Duals.
Ranked No. 13 in the preseason poll, Michigan hosts EMU, Dec. 8, in Ann Arbor. EMU will face Pittsburgh, Jan. 13, before meeting up with three straight national powerhouses in Missouri, Jan. 26, Kent State, Feb. 1, and Central Michigan, Feb. 8.
A FEW BUGS TO WORK OUT: The EMU wrestling squad came up empty in its first weekend of reuglar-season competition with a pair of losses. Michigan State topped the Eagles at Bowen Field House Friday, Nov. 16, 25-11, and Clarion got the best of the Green and White Sunday, Nov. 18, 21-10, in Clarion, Pa.
“The positives from this weekend are that I think we could have won both those duals if we didn't make so many mistakes,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto.
In Friday's match with the Spartans, the Eagles took the lead, 7-6, after terrific performances from redshirt junior Jared Germaine (125 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto (133 lbs.), but dropped all five of the remaining matches. On Sunday, EMU managed just three individual victories against a Golden Eagles team which beat the Green and White for the first time in three seasons.
MISSING SOME KEY PIECES: A major contributor to the Eagles' lack of early success has been the absence of two starters: Jaylyn Bohl (149 lbs.) and Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.). Bohl has been out with an injury since before the season began, while Whitenburg suffered an injury at the EMU Open, Nov. 3.
“We are missing two of our regular starters right now and I think the guys in there at those spots are doing a good job overall, but have not won a match in either dual,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto added.
Redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah has assumed the bulk of the duties for Whitenburg thus far, while redshirt freshman Justin Melick has taken over for Bohl in his first regular-season competition as a collegiate athlete.
BUSINESS AS USUAL: Redshirt juniors Jared Germaine (125 lbs.) and Phillip Joseph (184 lbs.) have picked up right where they left off after competing at the NCAA Championships last season. Both wrestlers combined to go 4-0 in their matches against MSU an Clarion, accounting for 11 of EMU's 21 total points.
“Jared and Phillip are doing a great job for us, as usual,” remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Now we need our other veterans to pick up the rest of the team in order for us to win.”
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Three wrestlers, freshman Jacob Dorulla and redshirt freshmen Justin Melick and Vincent Pizzuto, made their regular-season debuts over the weekend. Pizzuto went 1-1, beating MSU's Terry Turner by major decision, 14-5. Dorulla topped Clarion's Nick Milano, 7-3, while Melick went 0-2.
EAGLES WRAP UP NOVEMBER AT HOME: The Eagles close out the month of November with a home match against Cleveland State, Nov. 30, at Bowen Field House. The contest will kick off at 7 p.m. EMU has beaten the Vikings five straight seasons which includes a 33-9 triumph last season, Dec. 1.
