Complete Release (.pdf)

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
For a second straight season, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will tangle with Michigan State University in their first dual-meet of the season Friday, Nov. 16, at Bowen Field House. High school wrestling squads from all over the area will be in attendance to watch a pair of teams with conference championship aspirations.  The match will begin at 7 p.m.

“This dual is a fist fight every year,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto.  “This has become a great in-state rival.  With us winning last year, I think they are going to come after us hard so we will be ready for that.”

LET'S DO THAT AGAIN: Last season, the Eagles defeated their Big Ten Conference foe for the first time since the 1987-88 season, 20-16, Nov. 18, 2011, in East Lansing, Mich. Jared Germaine ignited the Eagles–who won 5-of-10 matches on the evening–early on with a pin over Eric Olanowski at 125 lbs. Aaron Sulzer delivered what proved to be the deciding blow when he defeated No. 15 David Cheza at 157 lbs., 3-2. Eastern Michigan got by MSU for just the second time in 16 tries dating back to the 1976-77 season.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Friday's tussle between EMU and MSU will feature five wrestlers who competed at the NCAA Championships last season with three from the Eagles and a pair from the Spartans. A combined four wrestlers were ranked in the latest national poll: Jared Germaine (23) and Aaron Sulzer (24) for EMU and David Cheza (18) and Mike McClure (9) for MSU.

RECENTLY: Since the 2005-06 season, the Eagles have amassed a 9-7 record in opening day matches. That mark includes last season's opening day win against Michigan State, Nov. 18.  Friday's tussle with MSU marks the second time since the 2007-08 season that EMU has opened the dual portion of the schedule with just one opponent.

EAGLES TAKE ON CLARION SUNDAY: After Friday's matchup with the Spartans, the Green and White hits the road to take on the Clarion University Golden Eagles Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. in Clarion, Pa. EMU has won the last two meetings between the schools which includes a 25-12 triumph in Ypsilanti last season, Jan. 15, at the EMU Duals.

FAMILY FEEL: This year's EMU wrestling squad features 13 student-athletes who attended the same high school as another member of the team. Newcomers Matthew VanCuren, Jacob Davis and Nicholas Barber were all standouts at St. Edward High in Lakewood, Ohio.

Representing Holy Name High in Parma Heights, Ohio are Aaron Sulzer and James Klosz. The duo of Chris Eggert and Chris Rau each went to Dundee High in Dundee, Mich., while Jacob Dorulla and Jake Byers hail from Rockford High in Rockford, Mich., and Jaylyn Bohl and Micheal Shaw are products of Allegan High in Allegan, Mich.

Not surprisingly, brothers Derrik Marry and Devan Marry both graduated from the same high school– Hudson in Hudson, Mich.

SULZER MAKING THE MARK AT EMU: Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer enters the 2012-13 regular season with 72 career victories, good for the eighth-most in EMU history. The Cleveland, Ohio native is six wins behind Doug Harper's mark of 78 victories from 1988-89. EMU wrestling legend Steve Brown holds the all-time record with 117 victories from 1984-88. Sulzer is coming off an impressive 2011-12 campaign in which he went 21-11 overall, placed second at the MAC Championships at 157 lbs. and won his first match at the NCAA Championships where he competed for a second straight season.

DELPORTO CLIMBING IN THE EMU RECORD BOOKS: With an all-time record of 65-55-2 at EMU, seventh-year Head Coach Derek DelPorto is third all-time in wins (65) among EMU head coaches, one behind Russell Bush's 66 wins from 1956-71, and 15 behind John Eisley's 80 victories from 1979-91. Additionally, his all-time winning percentage of .537 is good for the highest mark among all eight coaches in the history of EMU.

IT'S NO JOKE: Head Coach Derek DelPorto, who has become known for scheduling the toughest competition in the country, has lived up to that reputation once again this season. The Eagles will face five teams ranked in the top-25 nationally this season including No. 1 Minnesota Saturday, Nov. 24, at the NDSU Duals.

Ranked No. 13 in the preseason poll, Michigan hosts EMU, Dec. 8, in Ann Arbor. Eastern Michigan will face No. 18 Pittsburgh, Jan. 13, before meeting up with three straight national powerhouses in No. 7 Missouri, Jan. 26, No. 22 Kent State, Feb. 1, and No. 17 CMU, Feb. 8.

TWO TOURNAMENTS ALREADY IN THE BOOKS: Through two preseason tournaments to start the 2012-13 campaign, the Eagles have complied an overall record of 99-71 over 170 matches for a .582 winning percentage. Nearly half (20) of the 42 EMU participants placed at either event with one first-place finish,  three runners-up, four third-place showings and 12 performances earning fourth through seventh place.  EMU placed 13-of-27 wrestlers at the 21st annual EMU Open, Nov. 3, and seven-of-15 at the MSU Open, Nov. 11.
