YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A repeat of last year's season-opening performance proved not to be for the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team, which fell to Michigan State University, 25-11, at Bowen Field House Friday evening, Nov. 16. The Eagles (0-1) held an 11-6 lead midway through the contest, but the Spartans (1-0) came back to win the final five matches.
Michigan State opened the evening with a win, but redshirt junior Phillip Joseph tied match at three with a decision at 197 lbs. Redshirt junior No. 23 Jared Germaine and redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto charged up more than 1000 fans at Bowen Field House with back-to-back major decisions at 125 lbs and 133 lbs., respectively, to give EMU a five-point edge.
The momentum changed rapidly in favor of MSU following Nick Trimble's pin of redshirt junior Seth Schaner at 141 lbs. That pin gave MSU a lead which they would not relinquish. MSU rattled off victories in the remaining four matches to deny the Eagles their second-straight victory over their Big Ten Conference foe.
Friday's tussle with the Spartans marked the first collegiate dual-meet appearances for redshirt freshmen Pizzuto and Justin Melick (149 lbs.) along with newcomer Jacob Dorulla (165 lbs.). Pizzuto was nothing short of dominant in his bout with Terry Turner, winning a 14-5 major decision. Melick and Dorulla each came up short in their matches.
The match opened at 184 lbs. where redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah fell behind early, 2-0, against John Rizqallah. Hoballah racked up the majority of the riding time in the middle period and had several chances for a takedown despite never being awarded one. Rizqallah scored another takedown in the third period to win, 4-0, and give MSU an early 3-0 advantage.
Scheduled to wrestle out of the 184 lbs. slot, Head Coach Derek DelPorto bumped Joseph up to 197 lbs. to face Nick McDiarmid. Joseph's first-period escape put him ahead, 1-0, and a takedown in the second made it a 3-0 contest. In the third period, Joseph held McDiarmid to just an escape while accumulating 1:59 of riding time for a 4-1 victory. The match was tied, 3-3, after two weight classes.
In his first-career regular season match at heavyweight, redshirt senior Chris Eggert faced quite a challenge against No. 9 Mike McClure. McClure struck first with a takedown in the waning seconds of the opening period. Eggert was unable to mount a comeback on McClure, who posted more than two minutes of riding time to eventually win, 5-0, and put MSU back on top, 6-3.
Next, Germaine used an 11-3 major decision over Brenan Lyon to give the Eagles their first lead of the evening, 7-6. Germaine amassed a 7-0 lead in the second period after nearly pinning his opponent and earning three nearfall points. Lyon rebounded with three points of his own before the end of the second to make it a 7-3 match. The Saginaw, Mich. native put up a furious effort in the final minute to score a trio of additional nearfall points plus riding time to propel himself into major-decision territory.
Pizzuto then squared off with Turner at 133 lbs. A fast-paced opening three minutes finished up with Pizzuto ahead, 3-2. He quickly increased his lead to 6-2 with an escape and a takedown to begin the second period. Following another takedown, Pizzuto ended the period notching a pair of nearfall points to take a 10-4 edge. Pizzuto was relentless in the third period, scoring two additional nearfall tallies and four total points for a 14-5 win. EMU now held an 11-6 lead with two straight major decisions.
Schaner's takedown gave him an early lead over Nick Trimble at 141 lbs. The third period started with Trimble holding a 5-3 lead but Schaner hanging on to riding-time. With Schaner down by a point, 5-4, Trimble suddenly ended an otherwise evenly-fought bout by pinning Schaner with 59 seconds showing on the third-period clock. Michigan State stunned the crowd and found itself back ahead by one, 12-11.
A late first-period takedown by Dan Osterman put Melick in a 3-2 hole after one period of the 149 lbs. match. By the conclusion of the second period, Osterman had pulled ahead, 6-3, with the final frame also yielding little for Melick who headed back to the bench with a 7-3 loss. MSU took a 15-11 lead with three bouts remaining.
Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer needed a victory at 157 lbs. against Ryan Watts to keep his team in the match. But it was Watts who broke the scoring open in the second period and took a 3-1 lead into the final period. Sulzer's escape to start the frame pulled him to within a point, but neither wrestler was able to gain an advantage as Watts came away with a 3-2 upset victory and afforded Michigan State its third victory in-a-row. With two bouts to go, MSU was ahead, 18-11.
David Cheza clinched the dual-meet for the Spartans when he bested redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla by major decision, 10-2, at 165 lbs. Droulla held his own in his first collegiate dual-meet, but the No. 18-ranked Cheza was simply too much for the native of Rockford, Mich. Cheza scored five points through the first two minutes and tacked on five more in the third. Dorulla's two escapes prevented the shutout.
To close out the evening, redshirt sophomore Mike Curby battled Jordan Wohlfert at 174 lbs. Curby scored a pair of escapes to tie the bout, 2-2, midway through the second period. In the final frame, Curby took several shots at taking down his opponent, but it was Wohlfert who earned the edge with an escape. Wohlfert won the bout, 3-2, and made the final score 25-11 for MSU.
