YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team opened up the 2012-13 regular season campaign with an impressive 17-point second-half comeback victory, 50-47, against the Northeastern University Huskies Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11, at the Convocation Center.

Shooting only 29.8 percent from the floor and using stifling defense to prevent the Huskies from getting a bucket, EMU finished the game on a 19-1 run in the final 8:51 of the contest. Northeastern made only five baskets the entire second half, shooting 27.3 percent from the field (15-of-55) for the entire game.

With the solid defensive performance, Eastern improves to 95-0 all time when allowing 50 points-or-less in a game. The Eagles came back from a deficit of more than 10 points for the second time in their last four contests dating back to the semifinals of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Tournament, March 9, when the Green and White downed the University of Toledo, 59-57.

Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill. – Bolinbrook) led the way for the Eagles (1-0), scoring 23 points that included making six three-pointers. Tate was 8-of-23 from the field.

In the loss, Deanna Tunstull had a double-double for Northeastern (0-1) with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies. Jewel Tunstull followed with 13 points.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive flow early on, a trend that would continue the rest of the game. Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio – Sylvania Northview) picked up her second foul less than five minutes into the contest forcing her sit out for the remainder of the first half. With Fouty out for the half, the Huskies took advantage scoring 12 points in the paint.
A Tate three-pointer tied the game up, 10-10, with 10:44 remaining in the first half. However, the Eagles would go nearly the next seven minutes without scoring a bucket allowing Northeastern  to go on a 13-1 run to build a 23-11 lead. Another three from Tate broke the drought with 3:47 left in the opening half.

With Tate scoring 11 of her team's 17 points, Eastern headed into the half trailing 27-17 after shooting only 23.1 percent from the field.

The Huskies came out strong in the second half to increase their lead to 17, 43-26, with 12:20 remaining in the game.
However, the Green and White did not give up as Tate hit her fifth three of the game that sparked the game's final run. Fouty converted two offensive put-backs, Tate hit yet another three, and Taylor Bird (Lawrence, Kan. – Lawrence) came off the bench with a trey of her own to cut the deficit to two, 45-47, with 3:40 left.

Following the final media timeout, Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich. – Mott) stole the ball to give EMU a chance to tie or take the lead.  Inbounding under the bucket, Thomas found India Hairston (Flint, Mich. – Hamandy) on the block to tie the game up at 47.

With 1:38 remaining, Fouty converted 1-of-2 free throws to give the Eagles their first lead, 48-47, since the 13:26 mark in the first half.

Fifty seconds later, Bird came up with a huge rebound off a Northeastern missed three, giving the ball to Thomas on the outlet pass. With a two-second difference between the game clock and shot clock, the Huskies pressured the basketball forcing Head Coach Tory Verdi to call two consecutive timeouts.

Following the stoppage of play, Thomas was fouled and sent to the line where she converted both free throws to make the game 50-47 with 14 seconds to go. Needing a shot from beyond the arc to tie the game, Northeastern's Christine Huber sent a three flying from the corner, but it ricocheted off the side of the backboard. Tate secured the rebound as the clock expired giving the Eagles a victory in the first game of the season.

EMU is back in action at the Convocation Center Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. to take on the Michigan State Spartans, part of a five-game homestand to begin the season.
