Eagles Fall in Road Contest at Jacksonville State, 61-54

Despite out-shooting the Gamecocks, EMU fell to 1-1 on the season
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped its first road tilt of the 2012-13 campaign Sunday, Nov. 11, to the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks. The Eagles (1-1) hit 45.5 percent (10-of-22) of their second-half shots but fell short, 61-54, on the road at Jacksonville State (2-0).
Daylen Harrison (Akron, Ohio-St. Vincent St. Mary-Wyoming) led the Eagles' offense with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy-Arkansas) picked up 13 points of his own. The Green and White outshot the Gamecocks with a 41.7 field goal percentage (20-of-48), while JSU shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field. Eastern went 5-of-12 from beyond the arc good for a 41.7 three-point shooting percentage, while holding Jacksonville State to a 3-of-19 performance from three-point land. Darion Rackley led all scorers with 17 points for JSU and Brian Williams added 16 of his own.
The Eagles started the scoring with a pair of Matt Balkema (Roseville, Mich.-Cousino) free throws to take the lead out of the gate. A fastbreak dunk from Bryant extended the early lead to 4-0, but the Gamecocks took their first lead just two minutes later. After trading buckets back and forth, JSU used a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 lead with 9:46 remaining in the first half. The Gamecocks never relinquished their lead through the rest of the half and led by as many as six points. At the break, Eastern trailed JSU by three, 27-24.
Bryant led all scorers in the first half with nine points, while Harrison added seven. EMU out-rebounded the Gamecocks, 18-16, in the opening 20 minutes, with Harrison pulling down five boards, and Balkema and Bryant each notchin four caroms.
JSU's offense was strong in the opening half shooting 10-of-25 from the field, good for a 40 percent field goal percentage. The Gamecocks had eight players score in the first half, with Rackley leading with six.
Jacksonville State opened the second half by extending its lead to 10, 36-26, with 15:08 left in regulation. It was a Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) three-pointer that sparked an Eastern Michigan 16-6 run, which tied the game, 42-42, with 8:06 remaining.
The Eagles took their first lead of the second half, 44-43, when Harrison knocked down a jumper in the paint with 6:42 left, but the Gamecocks did not allow the Green and White to extend that lead. JSU then outscored Eastern, 18-10, down the stretch to take the game, 61-54.
The Green and White continues its 2012-13 schedule Friday, Nov. 16, when it begins a three-games-in-three-days weekend as part of the first ever EMU “Ice Man” Classic. That Friday matchup will showcase the Eagles and Eastern Illinois University at 7 p.m inside the Convocation Center.
