ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team fell to Ohio University, 45-14, in a nationally televised Mid-American Conference contest Thursday, Nov. 1, here at Peden Stadium. The Eagles, which trailed by 10 points at the half, could not get the offense going in the second half in Athens.
With the loss EMU drops to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in league play, while the Bobcats move to 8-1 on the year and 4-1 in MAC action.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyler Benz (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine Township South) finished the game 9-of-21 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. Meanwhile, sophomore tailback Ryan Brumfield (Chester Springs, Pa.-Owen J. Robert) had the best day of his young career with two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, gaining 57 total yards of offense. Bronson Hill (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Catholic Central) continued to shine in his breakout sophomore season, rushing 25 times for 111 yards.
Ray Guy Award candidate Jay Karutz (North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia-Holy Cross College) had another exceptional evening, as he averaged 42.9 yards per punt, with one downed inside the five-yard line.
For Ohio, Tyler Tettleton passed for 255 yards and three touchdowns, while the backfield duo of Ryan Boykin and Beau Blankenship ran for 128 yards and 72 yards respectively and each scoring a touchdown. Donte Foster caught seven passes for 164 yards and two scores for the previously-ranked Bobcats.
Ohio gained 559 total yards compared to 302 for Eastern Michigan.
EMU looked to open the scoring on the opening drive marching down to the 22-yard line of Ohio before the drive stalled. Dylan Mulder's (Saline, Mich.-Saline) 39-yard attempt then banged off the left upright and was no good to keep the contest score-less with 12 minutes still showing in the opening frame.
On the ensuing possession, Ohio needed only six plays to go 78 yards as Blankenship punched it in on a second effort from two yards out to give OU the early 7-0 lead.
After another lengthy EMU drive that came up empty, Cy Mauughmer (Glendale, Ariz.-Apache Junction-Glendale C.C.) knocked the ball away from Blankenship on the second play of Ohio's drive. Alex Bellfy (Brooklyn, Mich.-Lumen Chirsti) was quick to recover the football to give the Eagles great starting position at the Ohio 28.
Following three straight rushes, Benz found Brumfield underneath the linebackers and he was able to out run the defense for a 17-yard touchdown reception. Mulders PAT followed to even the score at 7-7 with 4:04 remaining in the first quarter. The score was the second receiving touchdown of Brumfield's young career.
Ohio's Matt Weller opened the second quarter scoring after a strong defensive stand by the Eagles. Weller's 25-yard field goal capped the Bobcats' 18-play, seven minute long drive to make it 10-7 with 11:41 left on the clock.
The Bobcats would expand it to a two-score game as Ohio's Ryan Boykins went 57 yards to the EMU seven-yard line after Boykins slipped numerous missed tackles on third and long. On the next play, Tettleton rolled left before throwing back right to find Chase Cochran alone in the endzone for a 17-7 edge.
With 2:08 remaining in the first half, Brumfield got his second touchdown of the game as he popped outside of tight end Garrett Hoskins' (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Creston) block and went untouched into the end zone. Mulder added his second PAT to cut it to a 17-14 game.
Following the second interception of Tettleton in 2012 by Devin Henderson (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook South-Harper Junior College), who tipped the ball straight up at the line, an Eagle three-and-out gave OU the ball back with 55 second left in the half.
Unphased, Ohio needed just seven plays and two timeouts to get a touchdown before half to put the Eagles down 24-14 heading into the half.
Following the intermission either side was able to get much moving on offense.
After a Karutz punt was downed at the Ohio one-yard line. The 'Cats would need just four plays to cover the distance of the field as Tettleton hit a streaking Foster for a 79-yard touchdown reception. Wellers' point-after was true to make it 31-14 in favor of Ohio with 2:13 showing on the third quarter clock.
Ohio's Boykin and Daz Patterson put it away for the Bobcats tacking on two late touchdowns to go up 45-14.
Eastern Michigan returns home for a Saturday, Nov. 10, contest against Central Michigan University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tickets for the contest ate available by loggin onto EMUTix.com
