AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior Spencer Slade (Saline, Mich.-Saline-Savannah State) shot a three-under par 69 to tie for third through the first round of The Firestone Invitational hosted by the University of Akron Monday, Oct. 8. The Eagles battled a lengthy frost delay to go along with tough conditions for a team score of 290 at the 7,125-yard, par 72 course at the Firestone Country Club.
Despite the delay which shortened the tournament to 36 holes from 54, Slade is just one shot off the pace of 68 set by South Carolina-Aiken's Matt Atkins and Ball State's Tyler Merkel. As a team, the Eagles are in a three-way tie with Iowa State and the host Zips while Mid-American Conference foe Ball State is atop the leader board with a combined score of 282.
Junior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) and freshman Brett White (Kentwood, Mich.-East Kentwood) are tied for 21st place with a one-over 73. Senior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) notched an opening round 75 for 43rd place while sophomore Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) managed a 76 in 58th
Final round action continues Tuesday, Oct. 9, with tee times set to begin tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. However, there is a frost advisory for the area, so a delay may be possible.
