Johnson Comes up Short in Rainbow Wahine Playoff

WAHIAWA, Hawai'i (EMUEagles.com) – On the final day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team improved by three shots to finish fourth in the 12-team field on the par 72, 6,228 yard Leilehua Golf Course.
The Eagles carded a 295 during the third round of play and combined with the 608 (310-298) they shot as a team yesterday, that brought their two-day total score to 903. Florida International, which was tied for the led after the first round, held onto that lead to take the team title with a score of 895 (294-301-300). Toledo finished second with a 897 followed by Washington State in third with a 898..
Senior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) fired a one-over 73 on day two that put her in a sudden death playoff with FIU's Shelby Coyle. Johnson and Coyle both finished the tournament with total scores of 218. Johnson shot a 73, 72, 73, while Coyle managed a 72, 73, 73. However, Coyle would eventually win the playoff with a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole to give her the individual title and Johnson the runner-up spot.
Johnson's tally of 218 is tied for the seventh lowest 54-hole cumulative score in the program's history, while the team total of 903 ranks eighth-best all-time in the EMU record book.
Junior Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) ended the the event in 12th place with a 54-hole mark of 225 (80-73-71). Junior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) finished with a 228 (77-76-75) in 21st place followed by Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) in 33rd place with a 232 (80-76-76). Rounding out the EMU lineup, Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) turned in rounds of 80, 83 and 83 for 63rd place with a 246.
Playing as an individual, Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) finished 65th with a 251 (83-82-86).
The tournament marked the last one of the fall for the Eagles. The spring campaign gets under way in February when the squad travels to Blanco, Texas , to compete in the Jim West Challenge, Feb. 17-18.
