PITTSBURGH
, Pa. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split a four-match set Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Pitt Duals. The Eagles recorded wins over the Virginia Military Institute, 25-10, and Davidson College, 41-3, while coming up short against host University of Pittsburgh, 22-15, and Columbia University, 30-12.

The Eagles (7-3; 1-0 MAC) wrestled in their first duals of the 2012 calendar year and also their first since toppling Ohio University, 22-14, in the Mid-American Conference opener, Dec. 4, at Bowen Field House.

Redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) went a perfect 4-0 on the day, winning a trio of bouts by decision and one by major decision. Sulzer is now 14-4 on the season including open and dual competition.

At 149 lbs., Corey Phillips was victorious in all three of his matches Saturday. The redshirt senior won by technical fall, major decision and decision, as he improved his season mark to 10-8.

In the opening match against VMI, the Eagles broke a 6-6 tie with three consecutive wins from redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl (149 lbs.), Sulzer and redshirt senior Lester France (165 lbs.). France turned in the most decisive performance against the Keydets with a 15-2 major decision over Carry Joseph to put EMU ahead, 16-6.

After VMI won the following two matches via decision, redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.) and redshirt senior Wes Schroeder (heavyweight) sealed the EMU win with decisions of their own to give the Eagles a 25-10 victory.

Then against Pitt, EMU fell behind early on and was unable to gain traction in a 22-15 setback. Redshirt sophomore No. 16 Jared Germaine dropped a tough 9-5 decision to No. 13 Anthony Zanetta in the 125 lbs. bout and Bohl along with Whitenburg each dropped their matches to ranked wrestlers.

Despite falling short to the Panthers, Phillips, redshirt sophomore Khodor Hoballah (184 lbs.) and Schroeder all won their matches by major decision. Sulzer also won his second straight bout by decision.

Davidson was no match for the Eagles in the third dual, as the Green and White recorded victories in all but one bout. Bohl and redshirt freshman Mike Curby (184 lbs.) each won their matches by fall and Phillips and Whitenburg both notched technical falls in a 41-3 rout of the Wildcats.

Germaine started the Eagles off with a pin of Robert Dyar at the 5:17 mark of the 125 lbs. match against Columbia. The 6-0 edge would be short lived, however, as the Lions won seven of the final nine matches to hand the Green and White a 30-12 defeat. Phillips and Sulzer were both victorious in their matches.

The Eagles continue their busy month of January Friday, Jan. 13, when they host MAC rival Central Michigan University at 7 p.m. Please note that this match will be held at the Convocation Center and not Bowen Field House.
