YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a 21-12 decision to Central Michigan University Friday evening, Jan. 13, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles led, 6-3, after three matches, but the No. 19-ranked Chippewas took five of the final seven bouts to put the match out of reach.

The Eagles (7-4; 1-1 MAC) fell to the 10-time defending Mid-American Conference champion Chippewas (11-2; 3-0 MAC) for the 21st consecutive time dating back to the 1991 season.

After No. 19 redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine dropped the 125 lbs. match, 12-6, to No. 15 Joe Roth, redshirt seniors Andrew Novak (133 lbs.) and Corey Phillips (141 lbs.) each recorded decisions to give the Eagles an early 6-3 edge.

Novak broke out for a quick 7-1 lead in the first period before ultimately holding off Zach Horan for an 8-4 decision. Novak was 45 seconds away from notching a major decision, but Horan caught him off guard and registered a takedown to pull back to within decision territory.

Phillips then fought off Scott Mattingly for a 7-4 decision for the first EMU lead of the evening. The Canton, Mich. native used a trio of takedowns plus a point for riding time for his first league win of the season.

The Green and White lost its next three matches as Joey Kielbasa took and 11-3 major decision over redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl at 149 lbs., No. 25 Donnie Corby squeaked past redshirt junior Aaron Sulzer, 3-2, and redshirt senior Lester France was out-dueled by Mike Ottinger, 10-3. Central Michigan held a 13-6 lead with four matches remaining.

At 174 lbs. redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph and Craig Kelliher tussled in perhaps the most exciting match of the evening, with Joseph notching a 7-6 decision. Following a tightly fought first period, the two grapplers charged it up in the middle frame with Kelliher recording a takedown and three near fall points for a 5-2 lead. Before the period expired, Joseph regrouped and managed a reversal to pull to within one, 5-4.

In the final period, Joseph scored three more points with one by way of penalty and one via takedown. Joseph held off Kelliher for the final 20 seconds of the match to make it a 13-9 CMU lead.

Then at 184 lbs., No. 5 Ben Bennett was simply too much for young redshirt freshman Mike Curby in a 15-0 technical fall. Bennett scored early and often, with the match being called near the three-minute mark.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg closed the EMU deficit to 18-12 with a 4-1 win at 197 lbs. over Chad Friend. Whitenburg defeated Friend for a second straight season on the heels of a first period reversal and third period takedown.

Finally at heavyweight, redshirt senior Wes Schroeder fell just short of an upset over No. 15 Peter Sturgeon in double overtime, 4-2. Schroeder forced the second overtime by escaping Sturgeon and earning riding time. In the second overtime, however, Sturgeon ended the sudden-death affair with a takedown to put the match away, 21-12, for CMU.

Eastern Michigan will have a day off before battling Indiana Tech and Clarion University at the EMU Duals Sunday, Jan. 15, at Bowen Field House. Competition begins at 11 a.m. with Clarion vs. Indiana Tech, followed by EMU vs. Clarion at 1 p.m. and EMU vs. Indiana Tech at 3 p.m.
