YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team is poised to host one of the most anticipated matches in recent years Friday evening, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. The Eagles (7-3; 1-0 MAC) will take on the 10-time defending conference champion Chippewas (10-2; 2-0 MAC) in a Mid-American Conference dual which has been moved to the Convocation Center due to an expectation of larger-than-normal crowds.

BLACKOUT: The Eagles encourage all fans to dress in all black attire, and the first 150 fans will receive a free EMU vs. CMU black t-shirt!

EMU holds a 1-0 record at home this season, having dispatched Ohio University, 22-14, Dec. 4. CMU enters the dual on a five-match winning streak and has beaten Ohio and the University at Buffalo in MAC action.

“It's always fun to host a conference dual, especially when it is against an in-state rival,” said sixth-year Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “This match could go either way at almost every weight class.  I think there are going to be a lot of close matches, so it will be fun and nerve-racking at the same time.”

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Friday's match with the Chippewas will provide plenty of nail-biting action as 125-pounder No. 19 Jared Germaine will throw down with No. 15 Joe Roth in a rematch bout from the Midlands, Dec. 30. Heavyweight Wes Schroeder will also take on No. 15. Peter Sturgeon for a second time this season.

Aaron Sulzer, who is on the cusp of a top-25 ranking at No. 26 will square off with No. 25 Donnie Corby at 157 lbs.  At 174 lbs. another wrestler just below top-25 status, Phillip Joseph, will face either Anthony Bill or Craig Kelliher. Joseph is currently ranked 28th by wrestlingreport.com.

EMU VS. CMU ON EAGLE ALL-ACCESS: If you cannot make it out to the Convocation Center, Eagle All-Access will also video stream the match with subscription packages starting at just $5.95.

SULZER HAULS IN TWO MAC HONORS: Aaron Sulzer was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week along with MAC Wrestler of the Week Wednesday, Jan. 11 by the league office. Sulzer, an accounting major with a 3.54 GPA, became the first EMU wrestler to garner the Scholar Athlete honor since Chris Jenkins in the 2009-10 season after a perfect 4-0 showing at the Pitt Duals, Jan. 7.

GET THAT CHIP' OUTTA HERE: In case you hadn't noticed, Central Michigan has all but run the table in the MAC in recent years, having won the previous 10 conference titles. This dominance has been bad news for the Eagles, who have not recorded a victory against the Chippewas during the six-year tenure of Head Coach Derek DelPorto. Last season, CMU upended EMU, 29-3.

Several Eagles have had recent success against the Chippewas including Nick Whitenburg, who posted EMU's lone win last year at CMU by defeating Chad Friend, 7-6. Whitenburg will have a chance to do that again Friday at the Convocation Center.

THAT'S NOT ALL: If you can't make Friday's battle with the Chippewas, the Eagles will be right back in action Sunday, Jan. 15, for the EMU Duals inside Bowen Field House. The Green and White will host Indiana Tech and Clarion University in what is becoming a yearly tradition.

EMU will wrestle Clarion at 1 p.m. and Indiana Tech at 3 p.m. Preceding those matches will be Clarion vs. Indiana Tech at 11 a.m.

EVERY DAY I'M HUSTLIN': The 2011-12 season has served as a very important marker in the developmental process of several young EMU wrestlers. For starters, redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine has cracked the national rankings, placing as high as No. 16 at 125 lbs. in certain polls with a 17-4 record.

“Jared is ranked in these polls because he is performing at a high level, period,” said Coach Derek DelPorto. “He will have plenty of opportunities to keep getting ranked higher as we see a lot of the guys that are ahead of him in the next five weeks.”

In his first season as a starter, redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl has added some much needed stability at the 149 lbs. weight class. Bohl is 10-8 overall, 6-4 in dual competition, and 1-0 in MAC bouts.

For a young wrestler like Bohl, the focus now centers on taking the steps necessary to become a truly elite competitor. “Jay has to continue to learn everyday,” remarked DelPorto.  “He has every tool a wrestler needs to be good at this level.  He is fast, strong, athletic and isn't afraid to fist fight someone.  Once he figures out a few technical aspects of the neutral position, Jay will win a lot of matches for Eastern Michigan.”

THE BACK BURNER: Collegiate wrestling is all about taking advantage of opportunities to prove your ability to compete. Several of EMU's rising stars, true freshman Vincent Pizzuto  (125 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Jake Byers (133 lbs.) have been proving their worth outside of the starting lineup this season.

Pizzuto holds a 17-3 record in tournament matches this season and is tied with Jared Germaine for the team lead in wins. He has placed at all five opens he has wrestled at this season including a first place showing at the EMU Open, Nov. 5.

“Vinny is doing a fantastic job at all the Open,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto.  “He, along with Mike Shaw is helping Jared Germaine and Andrew Novak stay on task.”

Byers is 9-7 overall and has shown an ability to win in pressure situations with a 1-1 mark in dual matches. He is also the team leader in pins with six.

“Jake is quickly developing into a very solid competitor at 133,” added DelPorto. “I expect Jake to continue his development and make some noise in the very near future. “

WEEKEND RECAP: The Eagles split a four-match set Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Pitt Duals. The Eagles recorded wins over the Virginia Military Institute, 25-10, and Davidson College, 41-3, while coming up short against host University of Pittsburgh, 22-15, and Columbia University, 30-12.

Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) went a perfect 4-0 on the day, winning a trio of bouts by decision and one by major decision. At 149 lbs., Corey Phillips was victorious in all three of his matches Saturday.

Several of EUM's non-starters stayed a little closer to home to compete at the Storm Open Saturday, Jan. 7. Vincent Pizzuto took second place at 125 lbs. as one-of-five Eagles to reach the podium. Chris Rau took third place and Derrik Marry fourth at 141 lbs., with Cole Dillman and David Box taking fifth and sixth place, respectively, at heavyweight.
