Eagles Sweep Through EMU Duals

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team bounced back from a setback Friday evening with a two-match sweep over Clarion University and Indiana Tech Sunday, Jan. 15, at the EMU Duals inside Bowen Field House. The Eagles bested the Golden Eagles, 25-12, before claiming a 26-21 win over the Warriors.
Four Eagles, redshirt sophomore Greg Egbert (125 lbs.), redshirt Freshman Alan Constable (165 lbs.), redshirt senior Justin Joseph (174 lbs.) and redshirt senior Matt Pettigrew (heavyweight) all made their first appearances of the season in a regular season dual against Indiana Tech.
Eastern Michigan (9-4; 1-1 MAC) took early control of the opening match against Clarion, winning the first three bouts for a 12-0 edge. No. 19 redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine registered a pin and redshirt seniors Andrew Novak and Corey Phillips each notched decisions.
A formidable lineup of Clarion middleweights tied the match at 12 apiece as Cameron Moran (149 lbs.), No. 7 James Fleming (157 lbs.) and No. 8 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (165 lbs.) all recorded major decisions.
Redshirt sophomore Phillip Joseph set EMU back on track at 174 lbs. with a 14-4 major decision over Nick Milano. The Eagles rolled through the final three matches with a trio of decision and went on to a 25-12 victory.
Head Coach Derek DelPorto called upon seven non-starters in the final match of the afternoon against Indiana Tech. Egbert and redshirt freshman Jake Byers (133 lbs.) each lost their bouts as the Warriors took a 6-0 lead.
Then at 141 lbs., redshirt sophomore Seth Schaner won the first of three consecutive matches for the Eagles when he defeated Adam Fahs, 11-4. Redshirt freshman Jaylyn Bohl then pinned Alex Gregory and Aaron Sulzer posted a technical fall of Reece Lefever to put the Eagles in front, 14-9.
The Warriors took a surprising 15-14 lead after Tanner Martin pinned Joseph at 174 lbs. Redshirt freshman Mike Curby immediately made up the difference with six points of his own thanks to a pin at 184 lbs to put the Eagles ahead for good.
The Green and White will hit the road for a Thursday, Jan. 19, dual at Olivet College in Olivet, Mich. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
