EMU OPENS 38th MAC SEASON AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will open its 36th Mid-American Conference season on the road Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, in DeKalb, Ill. against the Huskies of Northern Illinois University.
For the Eagles, the NIU game will mark the final contest in a grueling nine-game road swing that started Nov. 29, 2011, at Syracuse.
Eastern will enter Saturday's game with a 5-9 overall record.

ABOUT THE HUSKIES: Like EMU, Northern Illinois University also has a first-year head coach. Mark Montgomery was an assistant coach at Michigan State for 10 seasons prior to taking over the Huskies' program this year and he has a 1-11 record with the win a 72-46 decision over Roosevelt University, Jan. 2.

EMU IN OPENERS:  The game at NIU will mark EMU's 38th opener in Mid-American Conference action and the Eagles have a 14-23 record in league lid-lifters.

MILESTONES:  Several EMU players have hit milestone or are very close after the first 14 games of the 2011-12 season.
Senior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearbor Heights Robichaud) has played in 106 games for the Eagles while earning 57 starts.  He has scored 584 points to rank 78th in the EMU record books, his 255 career rebounds total is good for 73rd and his 104 three-point field goals is good for 13th.
Junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is 64th in career rebounds with 284 and his 116 career blocked shots is good for third, just four away from second place Bryan Nolan's 120. Junior guard Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) has recorded 81 triples in his career to rank 18th all time. Thompson has also passed the 300-point mark with 342 in his 40-game EMU career.

CLOSING IN ON 400:  Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) has scored 395 points in his 45-game EMU career.

HEADING BACK TO THE LAND OF LINCOLN:  Senior center Kamil Janton (Tarnow, Poland-Chicago Bartlett) may be a native of Poland, but he will be returning to Illinois this Saturday, Jan. 7, as the Eagles battle the NIU Huskies in DeKalb.  Janton finished his high school career as a standout at Bartlett H.S. in Bartlett, Ill., a northwest suburb of Chicago.

FINALLY RETURNING FOR A HOME GAME:  The Eagles will finish a grueling nine-game, 45 day road swing Saturday, Jan. 7, at Northern Illinois.  Eastern will finally get a chance to play on its home court when the Eagles host the Chippewas of Central Michigan, Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m.

LOW TOTAL:  EMU's nine-point first half at Virgina Tech, Dec. 22, is a modern-day low for an EMU men's basketball squad. The Eagles' 36-point scoring effort in a loss at Purdue, Dec. 11, was the lowest point total for an EMU men's basketball team since the then-Hurons scored 34 in a 54-34 loss in the opening game of the 1956-57 season, Dec. 5, 1956 at home against Hope.

LAMPLEY HITS FOR 37:  When senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) scored 37 points at Colgate, Dec. 1, 2011, it was the first 30-point effort for an Eagle since Derek Thompson scored 31 against Northern Illinois last season, Jan. 11, 2011. That 37 was the best since EMU's Carlos Medley tallied 42, March 11, 2010, in the Mid-American Conference Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio versus Akron.

STRICKLAND BREAKS OUT:  Anthony Strickland (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud-Adrian College) turned in the best performance of his short EMU career with 11 points and eight rebounds in a 74-70 loss at Colgate, Dec. 1. The 6-foot-5 Strickland, who sat out last year as a transfer from Adrian College, has played in all eight games this season, but save his best for the Colgate outing. He made 3-of-6 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws in that 11-point effort against Colgate.

FAST START FOR MURPHY:  The Rob Murphy Era of Eastern Michigan University men's basketball opened successfully as the Eagles downed the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, 68-57, Friday, Nov. 11, in the Convocation Center. The Eagles rallied from six-points down in the second half to record the win. The Eagles are currently  5-7 under Murphy's leadership.

LAMPLEY NAMED MAC WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  EMU senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for Nov. 21, 2011.  Lampley led the Eagles in scoring in three games last week, including a career-best 21 in a 62-51 win over Arkansas-Little Rock, Nov. 18.  He had 16 in a 66-64 win at IUPUI, Nov. 20, and 15 in a 66-49 loss at Texas Southern. Lampley averaged 33.7 minutes a game in those three outings.
