EMU HITS THE ROAD TO PLAY AT MIAMI: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will play the third of six consecutive games against Mid-American East Division opponents when the West Division Eagles travel to Oxford, Ohio Wednesday, Feb. 1, to square off against the RedHawks of Miami University. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Millett Hall.
EMU started that six-game swing through the East with a 65-47 setback at Buffalo Tuesday, Jan. 24, and followed up with a 55-50 win at home against Bowling Green, Jan. 28. EMU is now 10-11 overall and 5-2 in league action. The Eagles took outright possession of first place in the West Division with the BGSU win coupled with a Ball State loss at Ohio Saturday.
Miami, meanwhile, enters Wednesday's game with a 5-14 overall record and a 1-6 MAC mark.
BEST START SINCE 1997-98: The last time the Eagles were 5-2 to begin a league campaign was 1997-98. That '97-'98 squad won its first three MAC games, lost two, and then won two more to go 5-2. That team would lose its next game to go 5-3.
EAGLES MAKE NATIONAL NEWS: With the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's basketball teams sitting in first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division standings, the Eagles are in an elite category nationally.
Heading into Monday, Jan. 30, EMU is just one of seven schools across the 32 Division I basketball conferences that have both first-place men's and women's teams. The schools include:
MAC West Division: Eastern Michigan
Atlantic 10: St. Bonaventure
Atlantic Coast: Duke
Great West: Utah Valley
Mountain West: San Diego State
Southeastern: Kentucky
Sun Belt East: Middle Tennessee
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Rob Murphy, the men (10-11, 5-2) took over sole possession of the MAC's West Division Saturday, Jan. 28, with a 55-50 win against Bowling Green State University combined with Ball State University's 59-55 loss at Ohio University.
Meanwhile, the Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's club remains in a tie with the University of Toledo for the MAC West lead. The Eagles (14-7, 6-2) cruised to a 91-46 victory over the University of Akron, with the Rockets rallying for a 77-75 victory on the road at the University at Buffalo.
Both teams will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 1, with the men playing at Miami University and the women traveling to Ohio. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m.
TOUGH IN THE CONVO: The 2011-12 Eagles have made the Convocation Center a tough place for opponents as the Green and White have posted a 6-2 record in the home arena. EMU's only two setbacks at home have been to Michigan State and Central Michigan.
SWAT NIGHT: Sophomore Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day-Syracuse Univ.) blocked seven shots in EMU's 65-47 loss at Buffalo Tuesday, Jan. 24. That seven-block total ties the EMU single-game best for rejections. The EMU single-game totals for seven or more blocks in a game is listed below.
