Eagles out-scored 16-11 in the extra session to drop the 62-57 decision

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team could not hold on to a double-digit lead late in the game and then were out-scored 16-11 in overtime to drop a 62-57 decision here Wednesday, Feb. 1, evening in Millett Hall in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game.

Eastern would boost its lead to 11 in regulation, 45-34, with 3:28 left, but the RedHawks would mount a tremendous comeback and tie the game at 46-all with 17.2 seconds left on a triple by Jon Harris.

The Green and White then moved it down court and had a couple of chances to win it but an Anthony Strickland (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) shot was off the mark and a follow-up tip was also missed, forcing the overtime session.

In the overtime it was all Miami as the RedHawks would build an eight-point lead before closing it out with the five-point win.

Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles fall to 10-12 overall and 5-3 in MAC action while the win gives Miami a 6-14 overall record and a 2-6 league mark.

EMU senior guard  Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) led the Eagles with 17 while Junior Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) added 10. Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Detroit County Day-Syracuse) chipped in 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and a block.

Miami was led by Julian Mavunga with a 19-19 double-double scoring-rebounding effort while Quinten Rollins added 10.

Eastern would shoot an even 50 percent for the game, making 22-of-44 shots from the field and the Eagles would make 9-of-17 free throws for 52 percent. Miami shot  41 percent, making 20-of-48 attempts and the RedHawks would hold a 33-27 rebound edge.

Eastern jumped out to a 9-6 lead at the 12:52 mark of the first half on a layup by Strickland.

Miami would slowly creep back into the game with guard Josh Sewell connecting on two consecutive threes, with the second coming at the 6:13 mark to give Miami its first lead of the game at 12-11.

The host team would go on to build an 18-13 lead after the Eagles would go scoreless for more than three minutes.

Thompson would close out the first half for the Eagles with two straight threes to cut Miami's lead to three, 22-19, at intermission.

Foul trouble plagued the Eagles in the first half with 11 violations whistled to just three for the RedHawks.

The Eagles would shoot just 35 percent in the first half, making 8-of-18 while Miami was hitting at a 44.4 percent clip, making 7-of-20.

Eastern came out of halftime on a mission, running off 11 unanswered to take a 30-22 lead with 14:54 left in the second half.

The Green and White would go on to build a 10-point lead, 40-30, with 7:28 left on two free throws by Lampley, but the Redhawks would cut the deficit to six, 40-34, on two straight baskets.

Eastern would boost its lead to 11, 45-34, with 3:28 left, but the RedHawks would mount a tremendous comeback and tie the game at 46-all with 17.2 seconds left on a triple by Jon Harris and the home team would then dominate overtime for the win.

The Eagles will stay on the road in MAC cross-divisional action with a trip to Akron, Ohio Saturday, Feb. 4, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the University of Akron Zips in Rhodes Arena.
