EMU STAYS ON THE ROAD FOR TILT AT AKRON: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will attempt to regroup after a heartbreaking 62-57 overtime loss at Miami  Wednesday, Feb. 1, when the Eagles take on the University of Akron Zips Saturday, Feb. 4, at Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.
The game will be the fourth straight against a Mid-American Conference opponent for the West Division Eagles.
Despite the loss at Miami, Head Coach Rob Murphy's EMU squad kept its hold on first place in the West with a 5-3 mark to go along with a 10-12 overall record.
The Eagles are slated to host Kent State, Feb. 8, and Ohio, Feb. 11, to finish out its six-game swing through the East.
Akron, meanwhile, leads the MAC East with a 7-1 record and 15-7 overall record heading into Saturday's battle with the Eagles.

BEST START SINCE 1997-98: The last time the Eagles were 5-3 to begin a league campaign was 1997-98.  That '97-'98 squad won its first three MAC games, lost two, and then won two more to go 5-2. That team would lose its next game to go 5-3.

RILEY TURNS IN BEST EFFORT:  Sophomore center Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day-Syracuse Univ.) turned in two career-best efforts in the overtime loss at Miami Wednesday, Feb. 1. Riley tied his scoring best with eight points and his 11 rebounds were a career high for the 7-footer.

THE LAST TIME:  EMU and Akron split a pair of games last year.  Eastern upset Akron, 60-56, in their only regular-season meeting, Feb. 2, 2011.  The two squads squared off in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, March 8, at Akron's Rhodes Arena and the home squad posted a 67-53 victory.

FAMILIAR FACES: When the Eagles travel to Akron Saturday, Feb. 4, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the University of Akron Zips, there will be two familiar faces on the opponent's bench.  Akron Head Coach Keith Dambrot was an assistant men's basketball coach at EMU from 1986-89 while assistant coach Charles Thomas was a standout men's basketball player at Eastern from 1988-91.

MOVING UP IN THE MAC STATS PICTURE: As a team, the Eagles are in the top half of the Mid-American Conference in five categories heading into the Akron game Saturday, Feb. 4.  Eastern leads the league in scoring defense (58.9 ppg) and is third in field goal percentage-defense (.406).  In addition the Eagles are fifth in two categories:  three-point field goal percentage-defense (.315), and blocks (3.5). Individually, senior point guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland (Ohio) C.C.) is 8th in scoring (13.5) and third in free throw percentage (.861) and junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) is fourth in blocked shots (1.5).

EAGLES MAKE NATIONAL NEWS:  With the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's basketball teams sitting in first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division standings, the Eagles are in an elite category nationally.
Heading into Monday, Jan. 30, EMU was just one of seven schools across the 32 Division I basketball conferences that have both first-place men's and women's teams. The schools include:
MAC West Division: Eastern Michigan
Atlantic 10: St. Bonaventure
Atlantic Coast: Duke
Great West: Utah Valley
Mountain West: San Diego State
Southeastern: Kentucky
Sun Belt East: Middle Tennessee
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Rob Murphy, the men (10-11, 5-2) took over sole possession of the MAC's West Division Saturday, Jan. 28, with a 55-50 win against Bowling Green State University combined with Ball State University's 59-55 loss at Ohio University.
Meanwhile, the Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's club remains in a tie with the University of Toledo for the MAC West lead. The Eagles (14-7, 6-2) cruised to a 91-46 victory over the University of Akron, with the Rockets rallying for a 77-75 victory on the road at the University at Buffalo.
Both teams will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 1, with the men playing at Miami University and the women traveling to Ohio. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m.

EAGLES DRAW GREEN BAY FOR SEARS BRACKETBUSTER CONTEST:  EMU will travel to Green Bay, Wisc. for a Saturday, Feb. 18, meeting with Green Bay as part of the 2012 Sears BracketBusters event. The game will be played in Resch Center (9,729), the home arena of the Phoenix.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. CT, 2 p.m. in Ypsilanti.
The 10th annual Sears BracketBusters, a three-day men's college basketball event pitting potential NCAA Championship hopefuls against each other Feb. 17-19, will feature 13 nationally televised games – on either ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3. The NCAA hopefuls will be selected from a pool of 142 teams from 16 conferences. Green Bay, a member of the Horizon League, is currently 9-12 overall and 5-6 in league action.
