YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team opened their home season taking on Central Michigan University and Texas Woman's University Friday, Jan. 27, in their closest meet of the season, placing second.
The Chippewas from CMU finished in first compiling a team score of 193.325, followed closely by the Eagles, 192.725. The Pioneers from TWU rounded out the meet placing third with a team score of 190.550.
The Eagles finished the meet with a team score of 193.050, down by so few they decided to video review a balance beam routine they felt may have been scored incorrectly. If Eastern would have won the review they would have won the match, ending a CMU 24 Mid-American Conference meet winning streak. If they lost the video review EMU would have been docked .300 off their team score. After careful consideration, the judges decided the performance was scored correctly and Eastern was docked the necessary points and remained in second place.
“Our kids performed phenomenally,” Head Coach Steve Wilce said. “We are very confident in how they are performing.”
With the win Central remains unbeaten (7-0, 3-0 MAC), Eastern advance to (1-2, 0-1 MAC) and Texas Woman's University falls to (3-3).
Junior Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.-Methacton) led the Eagles on the vault earning a 9.700. Freshman Anna Willette (Pylesville, Md.-North Harford) and Jamie Radermacher (Tualatin, Or.-Tualatin) followed, earning a 9.675 and 9.475, respectfully.
Sophomore Ashley Quinton (Calgary, AB Canada-Bishop Menally) and senior Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Institute) had standout performances on the uneven bars, both scoring a 9.725, a personal-best for Quinton.
Junior Camille Cicchini (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.-Royal Palm Beach Community) and sophomore Taylor Patterson (Xenia, Ohio-Xenia) recorded a 9.700 on the bars.
Radermacher placed third on the balance beam tallying a 9.700, while Senior Tracie Tamashiro (Honolulu, Hawaii-Kalani) followed with a 9.600.
Radermacher continued to shine, while her and sophomore Miranda Jarvis (Westminster, Md.-Westminster) tied for first on the floor exercise earning a 9,775, a season best for both. Senior Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) followed finishing in second, recording a season high 9.750.
“We have a very young group and we are thrilled with how they are competing and excited for the future,” stated Wilce.
The Eagles are back in action hosting Central Michigan, Illinois-Chicago and Illinois State for the Michigan-Illinois Challenge Feb. 3. Competition is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Bowen Field House.
