YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)–
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team gears up for its final competition in the month of January Sunday, Jan. 29, at the SIU-Edwardsville Quad in Edwardsville, Ill. The Eagles will have their hands full with a trio of opponents including No. 15 University of Missouri at 2 p.m., Truman State University at 3:45 p.m. and SIU-Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m.

QUAD CORE: Eastern Michigan (11-4; 2-1 MAC) is currently riding a four-match winning streak and is fresh off claiming its second Mid-American Conference victory of the season, 22-9, over Northern Illinois University Sunday, Jan. 22, at Bowen Field House.

THREE TIMES THE FUN: EMU will jump right into battle at Sunday's SIU-Edwardsville Quad against No. 15 Missouri. The Tigers will roll out a lineup with nationally ranked wrestlers at seven of a possible 10 weight classes. Missouri's roster also features a pair of top-10 grapplers including 125-pounder Alan Walters and 133-pounder Nathan McCormick, who rank third and 10th, respectively, in the latest national polls.

Redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine (19-6), who was ranked as high as 16th earlier this season, will be tasked with taking on Walters. A win for Germaine would give him his 20th win of the year. Facing McCormick will be redshirt senior Andrew Novak (15-6), who just notched his third straight MAC win against NIU.

In the middle match, the Eagles will face a scuffling SIU-Edwardsville squad that is off to a 3-9 start to the season. However, the Cougars are coming off a convincing 33-12 victory over Central Missouri. The afternoon will conclude against Truman State.

AN OLD FASHIONED WHOOPIN': The Eagles won their fourth straight dual Sunday, Jan. 22, by a decisive 22-9 score against Northern Illinois University at Bowen. After the Huskies broke out to a 6-3 lead, the Eagles rattled off six straight wins to down NIU for the first time since 2009.

The Green and White moved to 11-4 overall. A 2-1 mark in Mid-American Conference bouts marks the first time since the 2007-08 campaign that the squad has won more than one MAC match in a season.

Sunday's match was highlighted by an impressive 8-0 major decision for redshirt sophomore Khodor Hoballah (184 lbs.) in his first MAC action of the season. Redshirt senior Andrew Novak (133 lbs.) also fought to his third conference triumph in as many chances with a 10-6 decision over Rob Jillard to open the scoring for EMU.

At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore David Box competed in his first-career MAC match, dropping a well-fought 3-1 decision to Jared Torrence.

HOBALLAH STEPS UP: Redshirt sophomore Khodor Hoballah made the most of his first MAC action of the season with an 8-0 major decision Sunday against NIU. The victory served as a confidence boost for the 184-pounder and the entire EMU wrestling squad.

“A win like this can only elevate Khodor's confidence,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. ”It takes away some of the must-win pressure that some of the lower weights may feel.

Hoballah took to the mat to face Shane Rosenberry. The Dearborn, Mich. native took a 4-0 lead despite a second period in which Rosenberry earned over a minute of riding time. Hoballah turned in a brilliant third period performance, scoring four nearfall points to record an 8-0 major decision for the lone win of the match which was not taken by decision.

Hoballah wrestled in place of redshirt freshman Mike Curby, who has posted a steady 5-5 record in regular season bouts. “Khodor and Curby are splitting time because of match-ups,” DelPorto added. “It's nice to know we have two guys that can win for us at that weight class.”

FRANCE FULL STEAM AHEAD: In case you were wondering how the Eagles have transformed themselves from a .500 team to a formidable 11-4 competitor, look no further than the transformation of 165-pounder Lester France. The redshirt senior has made his final season in an EMU uniform one to remember, posting a 13-8 overall record and a 2-1 mark in MAC matches.

“Patience, persistence and the ability to understand that learning is a constant and continuous process has greatly helped Lester,” said Derek DelPorto. “He's a fifth-year senior with a desire to keep getting better and put himself in the best position to win.”

In comparison, France was just 6-10 in all of the 2009-10 season and only competed in seven matches last season, going 4-3.

LET'S TALK BIG: Perhaps one of the most apparent things about the EMU wrestling team moving forward is its depth at heavyweight. With current starter Wes Schroeder in his final year with the squad, it will create a stiff competition between the Green and White's two young big men, redshirt sophomore David Box and freshman Cole Dillman.

“I'm glad there is a competition at heavyweight,” said Head Coach and former collegiate heavyweight standout Derek DelPorto. “There are a lot of teams that only have one option at that weight class. We'll have to wait and see how the off season treats them and how much they can progress during that time.”

Box competed in his first MAC bout against NIU and is 11-12 overall this season, while Dillman is 11-9 in unattached competition.

RAW NUMBERS: As a team, the Eagles are 295-236 (.556) in overall individual matches, 92-58 (.613) in regular season dual bouts, and 17-13 (.567) in MAC tussles.
